Outline your achievements, highlight improvements you’ve driven, and bring in hard numbers (e.g., exceeded targets, increased revenue). Show them exactly how your work has boosted the company. 2. Back It Up with Market Data • Talk to a Rec2Rec or check industry benchmarks to see what others in similar roles are earning. Use this info to show that your request isn’t just fair—it’s competitive. 3. Align with the Big Picture • Demonstrate how your role directly supports the company’s goals. Where is the company heading, and how are you helping get it there? Position yourself as an essential part of their future success. Remember: This isn’t just about asking for more—it’s about showing why you’ve earned it. Have you ever sat down and worked out your hourly rate? I did this on a client call this week and they burst out crying. They said... "My god. I was earning more 15 years ago." "I can't believe what I've been doing. How did I let it slip this far." "Surely that can't be right. That's harrowing." " I deserve a payrise, I haven't had one for nearly 3 years" That isn't going to get you the money you want - - shocking I know! ❌ One of the biggest mistakes I see people make in their annual reviews is thinking their boss knows when their last pay rise was or has all their achievements to hand. 💥 Your job is to own this conversation and steer it towards highlighting your value and impact. I wish it were different, but it's not. Here are 3 crucial steps to take BEFORE you ask for that pay rise: ✅ Build your brag book: Compile concrete evidence of your triumphs. Projects completed, targets exceeded, client praise - get it all down. ✅ Know your worth: Research what professionals in similar roles are earning in today's market. This data will help you justify your request. ✅ Craft your narrative: Weave your achievements into a compelling story that demonstrates your value. Show how your contributions directly impact the company's goals. This takes practice. £1,013/hr. My hourly rate... Sounds ridiculous doesn't it. Because it kind of is. But that was my hourly rate last month. This was a back-of-the-envelope calculation (napkin-math for my USA followers), based on: - Amount of time spent on sales calls - Number of deals closed - Value of each deal That's it. If I did nothing else other than take sales calls and close at the same rate, full time, each working day, I would have generated £151,950.00 in one month. Food for thought. Not just any food, private chef kinda food. Naturally, I had a lot of other things to do in the business than take sales calls, which I also wouldn't WANT to do all day every day. But me even doing this calc did a few things: 💭 Brought home the realisation that I exceeded my fantastical £1000 / hr stupid-or-so-I-thought hourly rate I gave myself after reading The Almanac of Naval Ravikant (by Naval Ravikant)... if you know, you know... 💰 Made me realise my time is WAY more valuable than I ever thought ⏳ Gave me focus ⚙️ Highlighted the importance of systems & processes. If I'm doing everything, I can't spend time on the most impactful things Is everything about money? No. But its a very solid metric to use in business, to tell if you're doing the right things. Whats the plan now? To build more systems to be able to spend less time doing anything other than sales calls, then build enough revenue to build a sales team, so I'm no longer taking sales calls, and concentrating more on Product. This may sound backwards to some. But for me, I've spent so many years doing it the other way around, I now HAVE to try it this way round (I am a scientist at heart - experimentation is me)... lets keep testing and failing, then testing again, and succeeding a little, and testing again and so forth. I sometimes see this as the ultimate life game. And I'm pretty competitive. Some would say. I just know what I've done, and what is working now. So, hey, if this is useful to you, great. If not... meh.

People often ask me what my hourly rate is for writing, and are confused when I tell them I don't have one. Because here's a typical example. And please don't clutch your pearls, but I'm going to talk about actual money. I know. It's just Not Done. But it will illustrate my point. On Friday, I had a piece to write for a client. I knocked it out in 20 minutes, it's a damn good piece, and they are paying me R2,500 for the piece. Do the maths – my hourly rate should be R7,500 an hour. If I charged that, I'd never have a client. If I charge a more sensible hourly rate, I actually end up losing money. Because that's the time I spent physically at my keyboard. It doesn't take into account the thinking that's been going on behind the scenes, sometimes while I'm at work, sometimes while I'm in the bath or washing the dishes. So I charge per word, or I charge a project fee. That way I'm quoting you for the value I bring to the table – more than 25 years of producing tailored content that speaks to the people you want to reach. It's not about the hours it takes me to do the job – it's about the hours I've spent honing my craft. That's what you're paying for.

This may be one of the clearest explanations of value-based pricing, which is also how I approach pricing my services. You’re paying for years of hard-earned wisdom and creative expertise, not hours. It’s a win-win. #pricing #expertise #value
