Every year, from November 25 to December 10, the world observes the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a campaign that aims to raise awareness and mobilize action to end all forms of violence against women and girls. USAID is helping communities #Rwanda combat gender-based violence, promote healthy family dynamics, and promote peace. #16DaysofActivism

This Human Rights Day, we proudly reflect on our nation's remarkable journey towards upholding and advancing human rights since the dawn of democracy.   As citizens, we understand that along with rights come responsibilities, including respect for the rights of others, advocating against discrimination and intolerance and actively contributing to societal well-being .These responsibilities are at the heart of our Meqoqo ya mookodi ('tales/conversations of the rainbow' in Sesotho) initiative, which seeks to nurture a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment within each individual at McCain South Africa.   Regardless of whether we're in our workplaces, communities, schools, or homes, let's embody the fundamental values of equality, inclusion, and human dignity. Remembering the Past, Advocating for the Future: Human Rights Day in South Africa 🌟🇿🇦 Today, March 21st, marks a very significant day in South Africa's history - Human Rights Day. It's a day of reflection, remembrance and a call to action. On this day in 1960, the world witnessed the brutal Sharpeville Massacre, where the lives of 69 peaceful demonstrators were tragically cut short as they protested against apartheid laws. ❤️ Therefore, today we honour the memory of those who bravely stood against injustice, commemorating their sacrifice and commitment to a future in which all human had rights and there was equality and freedom. However, as we commemorate this day, let us not forget that the pursuit for rights extends beyond just adults. Children, too, are entitled to fundamental rights that must be upheld. They have the right to: 👶🏾 Access quality healthcare services. 👦🏽Be protected from abuse, neglect and exploitation. 👧🏿A healthy environment, including access to clean water, sanitation and safe living conditions. 🧒🏼Be informed about and participate in decisions that affect their health, including in matters related to their education, nutrition and safety. Moreover, Human Rights Day highlights the shared responsibility of individuals, communities and governments to strive towards a society that is not only healthier but also more equitable. Youth movements have become a powerful catalyst for demanding change across Africa. Kenya’s #RejectFinanceBill2024 protests emerged in June 2024 as a response to a controversial finance bill that included significant tax hikes. Despite violent police crackdowns resulting in over 60 deaths, the movement successfully pressured President Ruto to withdraw the bill and dismiss several cabinet members. I traveled to Nairobi and met with Kenyan youth leaders Hanifa Adan, Journalist and Activist, Kasmuel McOure, Spokesperson for the National Coordination Committee of Peoples' Assemblies, and Mwanase Ahmed, Socio-environmental Activist, to discuss the ongoing dissatisfaction of Kenyan youth. They highlighted the failure of previous regimes to address economic hardship and government corruption that led to a collective awakening among young people. These activists stressed the need for civic education and community engagement to mobilize support across Kenya. Furthermore, the overarching sentiment is that youth will continue to strive for change and seek accountability from Kenyan political leaders, a sign of growing resilience in the face of systems that do not work for them. #kenya #africanyouth #youthmobilization #governmentaccountability #youthcivicengagement #socialcontract
