Today's "cool person I found via RSS" is Joanna Redden . She was involved in making a database that tracks Canada's use of AI in government agencies. 'Our research demonstrates key gaps in Canada’s approaches to AI governance. The first issue is that AIDA as presently drafted does not address government use. This is despite widespread use across the public sector. The Canadian Tracking Automated Governance (TAG) register lists 303 applications of AI within government agencies in Canada. Yesterday Ivar Siccama, PhD and I presented a paper on our ethical bias check, and how this is a first step towards AI Fairness, at the AIMMES workshop on AI bias (see https://lnkd.in/ejmsJQq2 for our poster). The workshop was colocated with the Fairness Cluster Event of the AEQUITAS Project, BIAS Project, FINDHR and MAMMOth EU research projects. There were many other interesting talks as well on AI & human rights, intersectional fairness, bias and LLMs, fairness in credit scoring, fairness and explainable AI, with an interdisciplinairy audience from data science, law & ethics and social science backgrounds. In this recent article published in Journal of Contemporary China, Araz Taeihagh, Hongzhou Zhang and I discuss diffusion of AI policy in China. Using New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan (NGADP) 2017, as the basis, we investigate the diffusion of goals and policy instruments among China's provincial governments. We find that provincial governments share the national government's economic goals but not necessarily political goals. We also find that political and economic capacity of provincial governments matter in terms of speed, and nature of policy diffusion.
