As a first-generation college student, I experienced firsthand the challenges of being "first." I was the first to graduate high school and navigate the college selection process. Once I got there, I had to figure out how to interview for jobs, much less get a job, create my own schedule, and pass all my classes. I did it—but barely. I know how hard it can be. Being "first" isn’t always a blessing; it can be isolating, and no one succeeds alone. That’s why I’ve dedicated myself to connecting my passion with purpose. At America Needs You, we fight for economic mobility by providing mentorship and professional development for first-generation college students. We currently serve 150 undergraduate students in NJ with immense potential, but they need our help to thrive. This #GivingTuesday, your support can truly make a difference. Please consider contributing to help these talented and ambitious students reach their full potential and achieve their dreams. Every bit counts: https://lnkd.in/eKrDDDkA If you’d like to learn more about our work or how you can get involved, feel free to message me. Together, we can empower the next generation of workforce professionals and leaders.

Career success is the primary motivator for today’s college students. It drives their choice of where to enroll and what to study, and plays a pivotal role in determining whether students are satisfied with the education they receive. So how can #highered institutions help students achieve career success? And what role does labor market insight play? Those are the questions we’ll explore in our upcoming webinar with Dr. Tana Hicks of Dallas College. Don’t miss out: https://lnkd.in/egZZpDQP

🌟 Rethinking College Requirements for Employment 🌟 Are we placing too much emphasis on college degrees in today's job market? 🤔 As someone who grew up believing that a degree was the only path to success, I've seen firsthand how many jobs now require a degree that didn't need one before. This trend, known as degree inflation, could be limiting opportunities for skilled individuals who can excel without formal education. In my latest article, I explore the shift toward skills-based hiring practices, the barriers faced by marginalized communities, and the importance of recognizing diverse educational pathways. Let’s open the conversation about inclusivity and the value of practical experience over traditional credentials. Join me in advocating for a more equitable job market! 💼✨ https://lnkd.in/g2Wfj5_F

I often suggest early career scholars be measured, even circumspect in their conversations as they learn their first job and their academic community. That does not mean don’t speak your mind. It means take time to become educated on important issues, learn the personalities of the place, and the language of your community. Once you do, join the conversation. We all grow stronger when people share their ideas and opinions about our research, our teaching and how we manage our disciplines. #academiclife

For years, people took on enormous debt because of the fear that, if they didn’t go to college, they would struggle in life. This is no longer the case. Today, there are more compelling alternative pathways than ever before and, more importantly, there is no longer a stigma about not going to college. If traditional higher ed institutions do not reinforce the correlation between enrolling in college and career advancement/success, they risk facing significant challenges, regarding enrollment, persistence and growth, among other things. It’s time for higher education - as an industry - to adapt and demonstrate its relevance in today’s job market.

I had the honor of attending Career Day at my daughter’s high school and my alma mater, Resurrection College Prep High School! The question most asked was “what did you major in?” - which makes sense as many of them are off to college soon. I tried to show through my career (um, police officer to marketer) that most careers are not linear - much more of a squiggly line. And that your major doesn’t define your future, you do! What is your advice for high school seniors as they approach graduation and college? #careerday #careers #marketing #advice

Students' career expectations may be misaligned with workforce realities. 📰 Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce estimates that by 2031, three in four jobs will require a college-level credential or training. ↪️ Yet, nearly half of students (45%) believe they can be financially secure with just a high school diploma. Properly aligning expectations can start in middle school. Here's how: https://hubs.ly/Q02WFjKg0
