The safety of melatonin, and why it needs to be fully controlled by Health Canada. In the USA, 11,000 children had been seen in emergency rooms between 2019 and 2022 after ingesting melatonin while unsupervised. Melatonin gummies were involved in nearly 5,000 of those cases. 25 products labeled as melatonin gummies contained dangerous levels of the hormone. One over-the-counter product contained up to 347% more melatonin than listed on the label, while another contained no melatonin at all — it was entirely composed of cannabidiol or CBD. https://lnkd.in/eFWkDBY7

Nothing makes me more mad, than deception! The health and wellness industry is no stranger to trends, but the latest misuse of GLP-1 receptor agonists in supplements has gone too far. As a business owner in the supplement industry and an advocate for health education, I feel compelled to speak out against this alarming trend. GLP-1 receptor agonists, like semaglutide, are FDA-approved medications used to treat specific medical conditions such as type 2 diabetes and obesity under the guidance of a healthcare professional. They are not supplements. Yet, some companies are falsely marketing products claiming to mimic the effects of GLP-1—misleading consumers in the pursuit of quick profits. The Problem: These so-called “GLP-1 supplements” are often poorly formulated, lack clinical evidence, and don’t provide the mechanisms of action they claim. Worse, some contain unregulated compounds or undisclosed ingredients, putting consumers at risk. These products exploit the growing awareness of GLP-1 medications without delivering real results—essentially preying on people's health goals and wallets. Why This Matters: Health Risks: True GLP-1 medications require careful medical oversight due to potential side effects like nausea, vomiting, or even pancreatitis. Over-the-counter knockoffs that claim to mimic these effects aren’t safe or effective. Misinformation: Consumers are being sold false hope with promises of effortless weight loss, perpetuating an unhealthy reliance on quick fixes. Trust Erosion: As someone passionate about creating science-backed products, this undermines the credibility of the supplement industry as a whole. Education is power. As consumers, you deserve better. As an industry, we owe you better. Supplements are meant to supplement—to enhance your health journey, not replace proper medical care or deceive you with pseudo-science. Let’s focus on evidence-based solutions, consistency, and building sustainable habits—not shortcuts that come at the expense of health and trust. Last but not least, shame on the brands that are doing this. You know who you are and a quick google search for GLP-1 supplements will show you the transgressors. hashtag #SupplementIndustry #GLP1 #WellnessTruths

Myth: Weight regain is inevitable when coming off a GLP-1! Today Virta Health published data showing it is entirely possible to keep weight off following a GLP-1 deprescription with the right support and tools. I'm proud that Virta continues to be the trailblazer in this space, now the first solution to be able to claim "we can be a GLP-1 offramp" AND have the published data to back that up (without the latter, the former is just a nice story or aspiration). Pharma and the obesity medicine doctors they fund want people to think this must be a lifelong medication. And it certainly may be for a small percentage of patients. But this data now requires us to push back on that narrative and sets the bar for what should be the expectation for those who do require weight loss medication. #obesity #diabetes #glp1s #ozempic #lifestylemedicine #foodismedicine

There are several questions surrounding the nutraceutical industry. Do supplements really help? Will they mess up my body chemistry? What is bioavailability? And many more. On one hand, supplements like creatine have received widespread acclaim in the medical community for their benefits. On the other hand, supplements like multivitamins and curcumin are shrouded in debates. So what do you believe? Like always at Livest Health, we like to dissect ambiguous areas of wellness and get to the bottom of it with explanations from expert voices. Read Dt. Kanikka Malhotra CCN,CDE, a new column on the basics of nutraceuticals and how to navigate this vast wellness space.
People are happy to take as many prescribed medications as needed, but why is there so much apprehension surrounding nutraceuticals despite several studies showing their positive impact? This could be owing to a lack of awareness, the bioavailability factor, and the need for more large-scale clinical studies to support its benefits. Clinical dietitian and diabetes educator Kanikka Malhotra CCN,CDE delves into the basics of nutraceuticals. There was a great article in the Times over the weekend quoting Tim Spector (eminent UK scientist and behind the renowned Zoe Studies and nutrition programme) on semaglutide/weight loss injections. It's a long article, but I have put a key quote below: “I’m not against the drug [Ozempic]. I think we have so many obese individuals in this country that we desperately need it, but as the only future policy it’s horribly flawed,” he says. He would still “absolutely” recommend weight-loss drugs to a patient who was severely obese. Indeed, taking Ozempic could provide a key window of opportunity for people to reset their attitude to food. “This is going to be part of the future whether we like it or not. I think it’s a perfect moment for these people — when their hunger signals are turned off [by the drugs] — to be retrained to eat in a healthy way, rather than just have less of the same junk food.” Tim Spector All of this goes to support Winchester GP' s view that responsible prescribing of this medication is absolutely non-negotiable. Further that for patients, simply sourcing the medications from an online provider and then DIYing the rest without significant ongoing support is not the way to go. Our experience tells us that patients need a 40 minute consultation before starting and then at least a further 3x 20 minute consultations in the first six months of usage. We also have a network of excellent nutritional specialists to refer on to so that our patients really do take advantage of the 'perfect moment' to establish new habits that stick for life. If you would like to understand more about our support package, send me a direct message. https://lnkd.in/e4W4BPcT #weightloss #responsibleprescribing #privategp #semaglutide
