There is a serious issue with data reported by member states to the European Commission. Some countries still resisting #DRS are recurring to reporting fake data to the EU to continue with an underperforming system. Our latest study presented today in Madrid presents the Spanish case, probably the one with the most exaggerated figures in Europe, but we will be watching and doing similar work in other European countries. It is a shame that it has to be civil society who does a watchdog job which is responsibility of the public authorities. This is why, besides publishing this and preparing similar work in other countries we will reach out to the Spanish environment ministry and the European Commission to ask them to double-check any self-reported data from the industry. 25 years of fake data is enough! ##circulareconomy #plastic #ppwr #SUPD #plasticrecycling #reuse ##globalplastictreaty
📉 Busted! Spain's plastic collection rate isn't 71%—it's a dismal 36%! 💔 The solution? A #DepositReturnSystem that actually works. Let’s make it happen! 💪🌍 Get the full details in our latest report, which reveals the truth behind Spain's inflated recycling statistics. Actual recycling arises at the point of virgin substitution in new product manufacture. Prior to this, the recycling rate is 0%. There might be collection / recovery rates, but this is not recycling. The true measurement is this for actual recycling: Tonnage (pa) used to substitute virgin / tonnage (pa) placed on the market each year x 100 = %? Not even close to the rates claimed. Then we have the c.36m tonnes of plastic waste exported from the EU each year to where, for recycling with the RofW exports too. Hardly. It is about time policy makers grasped the reality of the situation.
An much-needed, eye-opening report, which does not surprise me. Shame on those who manipulated the figures, their impunity has to end.

6moData should be accurately reported but this post may be missing important context. Plastic is <1% of materials and scientifically proven to be the least harmful option in most instances. It reduces materials use, waste, GHG, fossil fuel use and even litter. So, let's not get too hyper-focused on the least of our problems. Recycling is a good thing but far our major worry https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/plastic-fact-over-fiction-chris-dearmitt-phd-frsc-fimmm/
