✍ TELL-TALE SIGNS THAT YOUR PHONE IS BEING TRACKED OR MONITORED You may wonder why someone would want to monitor your phone. For some professionals, like journalists, politicians, business people, etc., it could be from seemingly benign motives such as having access to critical data and information to more serious intent such as kidnapping and ransom demands. For some, it could be for information regarding business strategies, financial, medical, and court cases, and even advertising.  So what are the tell-tale signs? ♦ Decreased battery performance. The camera or microphone could be on, actively recording activities and covertly forwarding data to third parties, thus quickly draining the battery due to relentless usage. ♦ Overheating. Relentless background activity is likely to cause the phone to overheat particularly at the back where the battery is located. ♦ Odd sounds during calls. Static, distant voices, or strange clicking sounds could be telltale signs that conversations are being recorded or listened to. ♦ Increased data usage. Spyware apps tend to forward a lot of information to third parties, thus consuming an inordinate amount of data in the process. ♦ Coded text messages.  Receiving regular coded messages, such as indecipherable characters, might also be a sign of a spyware application working in the background. ♦ Unusual phone activity. Queer activities such as innocuous notification sounds, screen suddenly lighting up, or sudden reboots are another ominous sign. ♦ Phone becomes unusually slow. Background spyware processes can claim a lot of RAM, leaving very little memory resources for legitimate tasks. In some cases, the phone might freeze or crash. ♦ Long shutdown duration. Unusually long shutdown times could indicate that some nefarious background processes need time to finish a task before a shutdown. They can even completely prevent a phone from shutting down before a task is completed. Keep an eye out for scammers posing as Apple Support. If you receive an unexpected call from someone claiming to be from Apple Support, ignore it. They will often spoof a phone number to make the call appear legitimate, so even if the caller ID says it’s Apple Support, don’t trust it. This tactic, known as social engineering, aims to exploit human vulnerabilities. Today AT&T made a stunning revelation: A massive breach has exposed all call/text records used by almost all their customers between May and October 2022. Our CEO was interviewed by CNN for the story. "Sanaz Yashar, previously an Israeli cyber spy, said threat actors can correlate the cell ID data with other information readily available to pinpoint where someone works – including at sensitive locations like the White House and Pentagon. 'You don’t need the timestamp. If someone is there everyday, you can understand their work routine.'" More Zafran insights: - The good: Users of apps like Apple iMessage or WhatsApp are relatively protected: this info is encrypted and stored and doesn’t appear on AT&T records. - The bad: It’s important in the context of the next elections. Telecom companies are a critical hub which enables elections to happen in a proper way. The mere idea that some of the processes linked to the November elections might have been compromised would be disastrous. - The ugly: The information is useful for financially motivated groups, for example looking to produce phishing ops and steal (calling) your credit card information; but also for intelligence organizations which make various usages of such data, including geo-locating some of the "interesting" users or locations. The recent AT&T data breach is not just any data breach, but the ripple affects of this are going to be massive in the near future. This is the largest telecom data leakage in history that has affected nearly 100 million cellular users in North America. Plus this data is available for anyone to buy on the Dark web. The data not only includes Names, Social Security numbers, Phone numbers, PUK Codes and other pin codes. But contains call durations, SMS communication frequencies and other such critical patterns. You are looking at data which will assist cyber criminals and marketing companies to suffocate you on your online presence. We will see a massive increase in Cyber bullying, Cyber Ransoms, Social media and banking account takeovers.
