The biggest mental problem when switching from web-dev to data scientist. 1. You've been creating webs to save your clients from using Excel. 2. As data scientist, you need to learn Excel. 3. Then you realize how many of your webs could have been done FASTER with Excel.

Another course completed towards my Google Data Analytics Certification. I had fun with SQL, Google Sheets, Spread Sheets, and learning how to ask questions to stakeholders to better understand what they want from data. Looking forward to completing the next course. Slowly adding more IT tools to my tool shed. That’s what this quarter is for me. https://lnkd.in/eQ8avNhz

I love a pivot table. I talk a lot (too much) about my passion for data and using numbers to tell a story. And Excel with a pivot table will always be top of my list when it comes to needing to get into data. It works for so many reasons. Data points, aggregations, summaries are all readily available at all levels of data - meaning it’s straightforward to combine information and determine correlations. The raw data needed to drive a pivot table is in itself a fantastic way of thinking about what you want to analyse. Often too much time is spent thinking about how to explain a query, or where to pull data from and in what format. With a pivot table it’s simple. 1 row per event, 1 column per data point. No matter what flavour of data you speak, sql, python or vlookup, it’s a format everyone understands. And I also have a long-held soft spot for Excel itself - ever since many (many) years ago I built a time and attendance system using it with a bunch of VBA code that landed me my first real programming job (thanks Mark Shackelford (PhD)!) All this said I often find myself up against the limits of Excel - 1m rows in theory but in reality way less regardless of RAM. And finally a few weeks ago I found the answer - https://rowzero.io/. Built by some seriously clever former Amazon guys, who really know big data. A pivot table with billions not millions of rows. I’m not being paid to post this - I’m just a very happy paying customer who can finally use pivot tables for even the biggest data challenge…
The best spreadsheet for big data.
