How about some glue on your pizza? 🍕 Even before this sticky fiasco went viral, BrightEdge saw Google drastically reduce its #AIsearch results from 27% to 11% prior to its official rollout announced at I/O. Some believe these erroneous and bizarre results could mean the end of genAI’s moment in search, but I disagree. 💭 These modifications indicate a concerted effort toward providing more accurate, relevant search results powered by AI. This is just the start! 💡 ⚠️ While Google continues to refine its AI Overviews, the user search experience may see some road bumps, but AI search is here to stay and it’s only going to get better. I spoke with Kate Knibbs on the future of search and discussed the latest BrightEdge findings on Google’s AI Overviews for WIRED:
The 'Hard Fork' podcast covers this in their latest episode. Really interesting stuff!
It’s non-toxic glue. No problem with that, Jim! 🍕

6moJim Yu, while AI Overviews being the future might be true, my sense is that future is likely farther than we think. AI is still nascent in reasoning that make sense to humans (we are unlikely to write about 'Please don't put glue on pizza') - i.e. data on non-sensical concepts for AI to have priors. Compare this to already existing caution - "Don't do X, Y, or Z". Google is likely generating synthetic data to manifest non-sensical concepts that aren't writen about for AI to have context without the ability to reason.
