Effective leaders should be confident, determined, and humble. If you find the latter characteristic surprising, I invite you to watch this video, in which I explain how I learned an important lesson about the power of humility. And THAT is what gave us the greatest Navy the world has ever seen - teamwork, and having each others' backs in any circumstance. Every leader and every team makes mistakes and sees setbacks. But accepting accountability, honestly assessing problems (or battle damage) then fixing things together brings you back stronger. West Coast in Barry or East Coast in Hayler/Desron 2/10 - or now serving our companies - it works. Hugh Joly once wrote for leaders to "remember who you serve ("hint: it isn't you")." Exactly right. Thanks for leading, Admiral.

Thank you for sharing this Admiral Stavridis. I think you’re right that humility as a leader comes from experiencing multiple failures in life. When you’re young, you just don’t know enough about life or yourself, to realize how quickly life can humble you. As we mature, we become more aware and that awareness will hopefully bring some humility. Great story, and great lessons from it. Thanks again for sharing.

Dr. Robert Roncska and Jeffrey Kuhlman recently enlightened me that our current unforced error rate is equivalent to 2 747s daily! As I discuss this with people I am asked “Solution?” My short answer is “Ego.” TO BE CONTINUED.
