How much caffeine can you handle? Caffeine is metabolised in the liver, but not everyone metabolises it at the same speed. This depends largely on the activity of a certain enzyme (called CYP1A2). Depending on the activity of this enzyme, you could be a slow metaboliser or a fast metaboliser of caffeine. Slow metabolisers feel the effects of caffeine more intensely—with jitters, nervousness, restlessness, racing heart, or trouble sleeping. For some, this means no coffee or maybe one coffee in the morning. Fast metabolisers clear caffeine from their system more quickly. These people can handle multiple coffees or even have one late at night and still sleep well. 🧬 This is based on genetics!
