The danger of metrics. I was keeping track of how far I was to getting the Toxic Waste book to draft-final. I was doing this by page number ...how many pages per day. Today I found a structural defect in the book and had to go back and edit about 30 pages of previously edited stuff. Now my progress looks like I went from page 70 to 72. When in reality, I've edited 32 pages and done quite a bit of work. Watch, always, that your KPIs and your metrics have everything to do with your initial assumptions of what constitutes progress and what actual progress really is.

The key word here seems to be “actual.” We only have hypotheses or models of what’s actual. This needs to take into account surprises, discovery, or risks.
