Admiral William H. McRaven’s 2014 commencement speech at the University of Texas at Austin is one of those talks that sticks with you long after you've heard it. It's the kind of speech that doesn’t just resonate with a crowd in the moment, but continues to inspire people from all walks of life. Drawing from his years of experience as a Navy SEAL, McRaven shared powerful life lessons that go beyond the battlefield and can guide anyone toward a successful, meaningful life. McRaven’s lessons provide a powerful framework for resilience, discipline, and a focus on continuous improvement. No one succeeds alone. Challenges will come, the ability to stay focused, remain positive, and keep moving forward is key to navigating these challenges successfully. Not being afraid to try new approaches or take calculated risks. Persistence can turn a potential failure into a success and often leads to the most rewarding outcomes. Admiral William H. McRaven’s wisdom isn’t just for Navy SEALs; it’s for anyone who wants to make a difference, overcome challenges, and lead a life of purpose and achievement. I highly recommend the book "The Wisdom of the Bullfrog" by ADM “Bill” McRaven, USN (Ret). Here’s why I’m posting about it – He summarizes Prussian General Carl von Clausewitz on war – “everything in war is simple but the simple things are hard” and weaves that into leadership and identifies many mottos, from the Boy Scouts to Army Rangers to Navy SEALS, as anchors that every member of that group can align with. So, knowing the right thing is simple – but doing the right thing, in the face of life’s daily obstacles is hard. That is the environment that every ethics and compliance professional operates under. It’s a simple message but a tough job to lead the organizations through the realities and uncertainties of decisions that get skewed by the chaos of life. So recognize the difficult job - and “embrace the suck” I’ll leave you with this final thought highlighted in McRaven’s book – The only easy day was yesterday. Let me know if you read it; or will read it and your thoughts #ethics #compliance #leadership

Lessons in Courage, Strategy, and Resilience from Audie Murphy (1925–1971) Audie Murphy, an beloved American hero, exemplified extraordinary courage and patriotism, offering timeless lessons in leadership. Born in 1925, Murphy was determined from a young age. After Pearl Harbor in 1941, he was just 16 and wanted to enlist. Although he was rejected by the Marines, Navy, and Army Paratroopers because of his age and weight, he finally joined the U.S. Army in 1942 at 17. Murphy’s bravery was evident throughout his service. Even after being wounded, he held off a German force single-handedly for over an hour from a burning tank destroyer. This act of valor underscores key leadership qualities such as bravery, strategic thinking, and resilience. While the realities of combat are far removed from any typical business challenge, Murphy’s story still teaches us valuable leadership lessons. His memoir, To Hell and Back, demonstrates strategic thinking and adaptability under pressure. Effective leadership, as demonstrated by Murphy, involves decisiveness and clear direction, while prioritizing mental well-being. Murphy’s legacy teaches us that true leadership is about more than just achieving goals; it’s about resilience, integrity, and creating environments where everyone can thrive. His strength in life-or-death situations inspires us to support each other in pursuing both personal and shared goals with courage and commitment. #Courage #Leadership #Resilience #AudieMurphy #MilitaryHero #StrategicThinking #Adaptability #Patriotism #Valor #LeadershipLessons #Integrity #PersonalGrowth #HistoricalHero #LeadershipInspiration #ToHellAndBack

After celebrating the 4th of July yesterday, here's some historical leadership trivia for you... Who is known as the Father of the American Navy? It is none other than John Paul Jones! Who? My thoughts exactly. When thinking of great leaders during the American Revolution, John Paul Jones never comes to mind...but he should. Why? Jones' leadership was marked by his innovative and aggressive naval tactics. He believed in taking the fight directly to British ships - which was unheard of at the time. Jones' most famous battle occurred on September 23, 1779, when his ship, the Bonhomme Richard, engaged the British warship HMS Serapis off the coast of England. He and his crew were severely outnumbered. They lacked the weapons and resources needed to win. However, when asked if he wanted to surrender Jones famously said, "I have not yet begun to fight." Jones refused to quit. He believed in himself and his men. He would go on to lead his men to victory, which was a huge boost to American morale. John Paul Jones reminds us how important leadership is. If it's the most important thing on the battlefield or at sea - why is it not the most important thing for our team? Great leaders have the ability to align, unite, and inspire teams to victory - even when they're up against seemingly insurmountable odds. #leadership #leadershipdevelopment #professionaldevelopment ________ Like this post? Years ago, at a networking event, a friend shared something profound that continues to inspire me. She introduced me to Naval Adm. William H. McRaven's timeless commencement speech to the 2014 graduates of the University of Texas, where he shared invaluable lessons from SEAL training. One lesson stood out: the importance of making your bed every morning. This simple act isn't just about neatness—it's a powerful habit that sets the tone for the day and reinforces the idea that small daily habits lay the foundation for larger achievements. It's a reminder that success begins with the first task of the day, and that consistency in small things leads to greatness in all things. #LeadershipDevelopment #PersonalGrowth #SuccessHabits #ExecutiveCoaching #CSuite

Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. The motto: ‘Serve to Lead’ has survived the changing social, political and economic climate, it has survived wars, conflicts and insurgencies, it survived cuts in defence spending, the change in military structure, and the evolution of training styles to better fit a dynamic conflict environment. Perhaps leadership is realising how to positively influence team members toward a collective vision. Most importantly , the core value of any worthwhile leader must be strong moral integrity. In my career Military and Civilian “Serve to Lead” has proven to be the most solid of maxims. So, what are your views on the changes announced at the USA’s officer academy? #Leadership #RMAS #WestPoint,
