Yesterday was my 5 year anniversary with Databricks, so I came up with a few interesting stats on my time as a Brickster:
1: number of potted plants on my SF HQ desk that did not make it through the office closures of the pandemic. I was excited to have my own permanent desk when I joined in 2019, but must say I love the flexibility of working from home now, and the many opportunities to see both customers and colleagues in person. And now the potted plants are many!
3: the places I’ve called home over those years, which is somehow one fewer than the number of Databricks offices within a 90 min drive from them at the time! It’s amazing to see the global scale we’ve reached.
28: Databricks workspaces I have bookmarked in my browser. Part of the journey I’ve enjoyed most is remaining technical and trying to write code every day, which means keeping up with a very fast-moving platform and its ever-growing APIs, SDKs, and features. I remember being thrown in to lead my first Delta Lake workshop only a month after joining, and that constant growth and learning has never slowed down.
94: the percentage of Bricksters that have joined after me. Wider and wider our circle expands, yet I’ve always felt fortunate to have brilliant colleagues that are also close friends and are always willing to talk about running, travel, home projects, and their latest favorite reads.
100+: this is a difficult one to quantify, but I’m sure I’ve worked with over 100 companies during my tenure across Customer Success and Field Engineering. Whether that was a single meeting to triage production issues or discuss architectural approaches, or multi-year embedded journeys with F500 companies, this is my favorite part of the job: working with the most talented engineers and scientists from around the world to solve complex, real-world issues using the latest data technologies.
Some of the best advice I received in my early career was that every 2 years, you should look around, talk to people outside your company, and make sure you’re still where you want to be. I never thought Databricks would turn out to be the high-speed adventure it’s been, and now it’s hard to imagine being anywhere else. I’m not one to post or tag on LinkedIn, but thanks to all the Bricksters who’ve made it a great first 5 years!
