Week 11 – Embracing the Rainy Season 🌧️ As November ushers in the rainy season, it reminds me of the inevitable challenges and unexpected moments that sprinkle our UNITE journey. This old photo of me in rain gear at a fun event exemplifies how we tackle obstacles with a smile, reminding us that teamwork and a light-hearted spirit are vital, especially as the year draws to a close. At the Startup and Innovation Center of Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin, we continue to channel this energy into our projects. The spirit of innovation isn’t just about big ideas and breakthroughs; it’s also about the joy and unity we share as a team facing the season’s unpredictability together. 🌦️ During the week, I had the pleasure to learn about quite some interesting tools used in the ecosystem: 1️⃣ A digital platform to manage incubation and acceleration programs. May sound trivial, but I see great potential to streamline existing (not so digital) processes. 2️⃣ A software to host digital offices as an additional layer to physical workspaces. Quoting the inventor: "Like Discord with Video". 3️⃣ An AI tool to help with startup funding proposals like EXIST - Existenzgründungen aus der Wissenschaft. While we have already some experience, with an optimized process at HTW Startup (EXIST Runway), leveraging productivity tools can save time and nerves. 4️⃣ An AI-based toolchain to create engaging text to video content. Hinterland of Things: A Reality Check Typical Conference Schedule for Most Attendees: - TAKE: A picture with “old classmates” to prove it was a success. - TELL: A post highlighting that the German Mittelstand has three big topics: 1. AI, 2. and 3. (two numbers to work on). - TOAST: Link five people you met for ten minutes on LinkedIn to show you made valuable connections. My Expectations for Startups at a Conference: - SEE: Identify targets. - SELL: Promote products. - SERVE: Engage with clients. My Actual Experience: - TALK: People still prefer talking about things rather than walking the talk. Few rational discussions, mostly generic KPIs. Key Insights: - For Startups and Founders: Focus on going live quickly and developing products people love, rather than overpromising at conferences. - For Venture Builders and Studios: Prioritize product development over conference networking—start solving problems instead of complaining about structures. Conclusion: Spend more time on building - please. --- I am not in love with conferences, even the Hinterland of Things felt more like a regular more hands-on fair. Yesterday, our CEO, Adam Brown, participated in a panel discussion for EIT Digital's Tell Your Story: Effective Communication for Scientists event. The session focused on helping deep tech founders communicate complex scientific concepts in ways that resonate with non-scientific audiences. Adam, along with three other founders from across Europe, shared valuable insights on storytelling, founding teams, early funding, and tailoring messages for different audiences—from investors to customers. The discussion emphasised the importance of knowing your audience, solving real problems, and effectively conveying your vision to foster collaboration and interest. As Bellrock Technology Ltd’s co-founder, Adam was invited to share our spinout story and his experience in making data-driven solutions accessible and compelling. Questions focused on bringing together a winning founding team and how to use public funding, accelerator and incubator programmes to support the early stages of business. One key question asked was how to convince someone to work with you in under three minutes, whether it’s a client to work with you or an investor to invest. Adam’s answer was refreshingly practical: “You can’t always. Sometimes, they’re just not the right fit because you're talking about forming a business relationship. When that happens, don’t waste time; walk away and find a better match.” Knowing your audience and ensuring your solution addresses a real problem are essential—but so is recognising when a business relationship might not align.
