While being a friendly neighbor and ambassador of your culture is vital for growing healthy humanity 🌱, Peter Kring of Finca La Isla pointed out something that really made an impression on me. He says that the best way to get your neighbors’ attention and get them naturally interested in whatever methods of land management or business that you might want to demonstrate to them is to show them that what you’re doing can make money. He encourages us to remember that farming is a business, and you need ways to sustain it. Many of the locals that Peter influences are those that come to his place to buy trees 🌳. They see what he’s doing and start to ask questions. Peter gives back to his community in many ways. He heads up the local farmers market and is part of a group of farmers who’ve formed a local organic certification association. By applying collectively, the farmers are able to save significantly on fees. An awesome byproduct is that they end up working collectively to uphold the standard. Selling at most farmers’ market doesn’t require organic certification, but Peter and the association created a unique market, specifically for certified growers 🌾. Enter Erin Schutt, associate manger supporting the global nuts category at General Mills. Erin has played a key role in advancing our ingredient sourcing efforts and fostering strong supplier relationships. Her latest achievement is securing regenerative almonds for the new LÄRABAR Trail Mix Bars, where more than half the almonds in every bar are grown using regenerative farming practices. “Our journey involved visiting almond orchards in California to ensure they aligned with our sustainability goals and then securing enough almonds to meet our volume requirements. This is General Mills’ debut with regenerative almonds. We're making a positive impact on the environment while responding to consumer demands." Navigating this new territory wasn’t without challenges. “This is a new practice among growers and there’s still much to learn and refine. June 18th 2024, Waikato Curious Cockies, Mangatarata, Waikato The group visited with a couple selling their own organic meat products preservative free. They’ve developed a small farm system allowing them to run two other businesses which help fund on-farm projects to fit with their brand including a wetland. They’re exploring methods to improve pasture production and practices to minimise problems with heavy soils. One observation they’ve noticed, animals do not look for shade when nitrogen is not being used. Have plenty of farm shade but animals do not seek it when given opportunities. The second was an organic dairy which uses their herd home to maximise pasture growth. Soils are silt/peat over marine clay, easily water logged and neighbour is one of the largest swamps in Waikato. Multi-species mixes drive pasture production. A local DairyNZ group facilitator held a field day there and was so impressed with the amount of grass grown without urea, he left the agency because he couldn’t find anybody interested in what this family discovered.
