“That Shift4 chooses to capitalize R&D tells you all you need to know: no real tech company does this. Software is capitalized and then amortized instead of being expensed when the company wants to show lower reported expenses and therefore higher net income. Across the industry, about 57% of public U.S. software companies capitalize some percentage of their R&D spend, though notables such as Salesforce, Amazon, Workday, and Atlassian capitalize less than 1% of their R&D spend. By comparison, Toast spends $350M a year on R&D. And it’s not capitalized.”

Amazon published CEO Andy Jassy's 2023 Letter to Shareholders yesterday. I make it a point every year to read the shareholder letter from the perspectives of an employee, customer, and owner. The update on how various lines of business are performing is always interesting, but what engages me more is the content further down - deep insights into some unique aspect of how Amazon operates. That part of this year's letter focused on the concept of "primitives" or foundational building blocks, and how Amazon uses them to accelerate innovation. The first example of this centered on - you guessed it! - APIs, and Amazon's journey "refactoring these ecommerce components into true primitive services with well-documented, stable APIs that enabled our builders to use each other’s services without any coordination tax." I geeked out over APIs reading through the ensuing details; mentally I was the Pointing Rick Dalton meme. APIs are an incredibly powerful type of primitive that enable developers, startups, and enterprises to build better and faster. That's been true for Amazon itself, and is also the case for Amazon API Gateway customers. In reading Andy's paragraph below, in my head I replaced "primitives" with "APIs" to appreciate the importance and value of what API Gateway enables builders to do: "Building in primitives meaningfully expands your degrees of freedom. You can keep your primitives to yourself and build compelling features and capabilities on top of them to allow your customers and business to reap the benefits of rapid innovation. You can offer primitives to external customers as paid services (as we have with AWS and our more recent logistics offerings). Or, you can compose these primitives into external, paid applications as we have with FBA, Buy with Prime, or Supply Chain by Amazon (a recently released logistics service that integrates several of our logistics primitives). But, you’ve got options. You’re only constrained by the primitives you’ve built and your imagination." https://lnkd.in/g5sAQnHW

DESPITE THE MAJOR CHALLENGES IN THE QUICK COMMERCE INDUSTRY, Can BLINKIT SURPASS AMAZON in the upcoming years? FOOD FOR THOUGHT (FFT) PART 3 first off, let's get into some past details of it 3 Major challenges they faced : 1. low AOV (average order value) were hurting profits in this industry, if the companies have low AOV they can't survive for much longer as their expenses would surpass their sales in a snap (profit percentage would be less as of low AOV , sustainability threat would be there ) 2. Attaining the gross margin is challenging ( majorly it was with D-mart accounting for 16% of it , as per Blinkit, in the year 2021-22) *GROSS MARGIN - The portion of a company's revenue left over after direct costs are subtracted (i.e. - excluding variable cost)* 3. Delivery costs were hurting profits, being one of the major pain in it , if they have it on a lower level, it was difficult to obtain more profits as the expenses were draining money + they can't increase it much until and unless they have an increasing AOV. STAY TUNED FOR THE MAJOR PART

Ask me about Document Manipulation inside Appian applications!
2moDoorDash also just "innovated" a new fee on top of all other fees. I hope that is not a side benefit of its tech investments.
