Dr Juliet Bourke GAICD's book 'Which two heads are better than one?" is a great and recommended resource that outlines the benefits of Board Diversity for breakthrough thinking and smarter collective decisions. For those who haven't read I thought I'd share this article which highlights some of the key lessons on broader board diversity https://lnkd.in/gBXFs4hk
1️⃣ Reducing risk and increasing buy-in - taking into account broader stakeholder perspectives
2️⃣ Helping to put a 'people' lens onto decision making
3️⃣ Letting each perspective be heard (of course, the role of Chair and having an inclusive and psychologically safe environment are critical here)
4️⃣ Gaining the benefits of diversity of thought to maximise group potential - no one board member knows everything, and it's each member's role to listen hard and respect the view of each other
5️⃣ Having a gender-balanced and racially diverse board can help to create an environment with greater sharing of voice and helping to elicit underlying diversity of thinking.

Special things happen when you bring together an incredible coach and an open, growth-minded person!
Coaching is a true privilege—and it’s something we should never take for granted. But when you coach someone who’s genuinely ready to grow and eager to be developed—that’s when the magic happens.
As coaches, we owe it to those we support to create the best possible space for them to thrive and become their best selves. It’s about listening deeply, challenging with care, and celebrating every step forward.
Keeeeeep Coaching!!!!!
Finally Well done to Chris & Dianne, A-MA-ZING, there is no better example than this!!

Being the Executive Director is tough and requires a special blend of skills and character traits. In our online support groups (ie ED Happy Hour), we've been snarkily referring to ourselves as unicorns since before the laugh/cry emoji existed. 🦄😂
This article outlines a few reasons why it's especially difficult for EDs in the arts right now, and especially in dance:
1️⃣ Generating revenue, primarily fundraising and ticket sales, is as hard as it's ever been.
2️⃣ Generational change is impacting audience behaviors and staff succession.
3️⃣ A successful ED must have business acumen, the ability to fundraise, and a bunch of other skills... but the salary rarely matches the qualifications.
I was fortunate to go through the 2-year AIM program with the DeVos Institute of Arts Management and Michael Kaiser, who is quoted in the article, while serving as the Executive Director of Invertigo Dance Theatre. That was in the before-times, but the three pillars still hold true: artistic boldness, institutional marketing, and creating a sense of belonging.
I went to a dance show this weekend that embodied these practices. I sat with three other unicorns in the back row. 🦄🦄🦄🦄 When the program director made a bold, impromptu fundraising ask during the welcome address, all four of us erupted in applause and cheers.
The arts leaders exist. They may be magical, but they are real. If we, as a society and field, can manage to provide succession planning, leadership training, and adequate funding, we might just be able to keep them from going extinct.

Our bespoke leadership development, one-to-one coaching, and group development, capped off with one of our Reach Your Peak events, is the premier product we offer at The Pathway and was designed to create lasting change across the board.
So, why do companies choose to work with us? It’s because they wish to Empower the People Who Propel Their Business Success.
Here are the outcomes this 9-month project achieves:
1. Recruit and Develop Talent: We collaborate with organisations to hire the right people and invest in their development, ensuring your team has the skills and motivation needed to excel.
2. Maximise Productivity with Existing Resources: We help optimise your current resources by encouraging creativity, efficiency, and resourcefulness within your team. This boosts productivity without necessarily requiring additional input.
3. Challenge the Status Quo: We foster a culture of innovation by questioning existing practices and encouraging your team to think critically about improvements and adaptations in today’s fast-paced world.
4. Align Behind a Common Purpose: We ensure that company values are clearly defined and communicated, with all employees working towards a shared vision. Alignment around a common purpose unifies the team and drives collective effort. Our approach helps individuals understand themselves, others, and the business values and connects everyone to one vision.
5. Empower Individuals to Drive Their Own Ambitions: We encourage employees to set their own goals and take ownership of their career growth. By empowering your team, you foster a sense of responsibility and personal investment in the company’s success.
6. Achieve Business Results: When steps 1 through 5 are successfully implemented, the result is a high-performing organisation that meets its business objectives. The foundation laid in the previous steps naturally leads to strong business outcomes. In summary, by recruiting and developing the right talent, optimising resources, challenging the status quo, aligning behind a common purpose, and empowering employees, you create a robust environment that drives business success.
