If you're one of the people in the middle of a difficult job search, I know it's not much consolation, but you're not alone. There are so many talented people who are struggling, even though they are doing all the right things to get hired. Despite the low unemployment rate, this job market is challenging for many job seekers. One reason is that there's a mismatch between the companies that are hiring (social assistance, healthcare, transportation, and retail) and the companies that are laying off (tech, media, finance). Another is that even though the economy is creating jobs, the 175,000 created in April isn't that many when you consider the number of people out of work. If you're one of those people, please know it's not just you. Despite the rosy picture painted by a 3.9% unemployment rate, it doesn't matter what the rate is if you're laid off and are having trouble finding your next position. Compound that with limited unemployment benefits (in dollars and weeks), juggling bills, and staying positive in tough circumstances can be really hard.
