From Hospitality to Event Production: Lessons That Transcend Industries. For 17 years, I dedicated myself to the restaurant and hospitality world. At times, I faced the pervasive notion that waitressing was a “dead-end job.” These voices—likely echoing outdated schools of thought—seemed to diminish the craft of service, connection, and adaptability that the industry demands. Fast forward to today, as I reflect on my work in event production and sales, I’m struck by how invaluable those years have been. The ability to connect authentically with anyone, deliver exceptional service, juggle tasks with efficiency, and anticipate client needs—skills honed over countless shifts—have become cornerstones of my approach to creating impactful corporate events. In conversations with large clients, these qualities set me apart. They foster trust and enable me to design experiences that resonate deeply with their teams and audiences. I’m profoundly grateful for my colleagues and mentors along the way. Not everyone recognized the potential in hospitality work, but a few had the foresight to encourage me to dream bigger. I love to give credit where it is due. Which is why I emailed the head of banqueting at the Grand Plaza Mövenpick Media City last week to praise their staff, in particular Kevin (IT), Joy and Kamal (Customer Service). Sadly, I only managed to get a pic with Kamal… though Kevin and Joy were also a pleasure to work with and super helpful. You know the type… not over-the-top. Just excellent customer service. With an authentic warmth and smile. In fact, I was so impressed with the hotel, I sent the details to a friend who runs her own event management company and another friend who arranges group travel… telling them both to check the hotel out and consider it for their upcoming projects. I also told friends about their F&B outlets – in particular the one on the 23rd floor with views overlooking the ocean and Sheikh Zayed Road. This is exactly what I mean when I say ‘Soft skillls deliver hard results’. Without following the paper trail (and who does?), nobody knows where new business comes from. It often comes from situations just like this… where one happy customer spreads the word to their contacts about excellent customer service.
