I had great fun presenting some of Spare's #research on the social impacts of #microtransit and #paratransit at the Urban Big Data Centre in Glasgow. It was particularly valuable to get feedback from UBDC's experts on how to improve the quality of #data we collect (e.g. from rider surveys), to improve the reliability of our findings.
Special thanks to Qunshan Zhao for inviting me to #UBDC 🤓 This kind of collaborative sharing of perspectives between academia and industry is vital for pushing the boundaries of #transportation#planning and #policy.

🌐 Sunday Reflections on Data Innovation 🌱
As a data enthusiast, I love discovering fresh perspectives that bring tech closer to sustainability. Today, I’m exploring the fascinating proposal by Cliff Kapono and Keolu Fox, who suggest using Indigenous plant DNA for data storage—a concept that may redefine the environmental impact of data centers.
Highlights: 🌊 Kapono and Fox discuss their unique friendship and a shared goal of sustainable tech.
📱 With rising data consumption, they point out the need for innovative storage solutions.
🌿 Their idea? Storing data in Indigenous plant genomes, directly addressing climate change.
🌍 Did you know? Data centers contribute more to CO2 emissions than the airline industry!
📊 DNA's immense storage capacity could be a game-changer, merging biology with big data.
🌱 Envisioning Indigenous lands as “biological data centers” could honor both cultural heritage and ecosystem resilience.
Key Insights: 🌐 Data Storage Crisis: As IoT and data consumption soar, traditional storage struggles to keep up.
🍃 Indigenous Knowledge: Leveraging native plants for data storage merges ecological responsibility with cultural preservation.
🔋 Energy Impact: Data centers use vast energy resources—DNA storage could be a greener alternative.
🔍 Scientific Potential: DNA has the ability to store diverse media types, hinting at endless applications.
🏞️ Land as Data Space: Embedding data in the land ties it to cultural and ecological roots.
🌍 A Holistic Solution: This approach reminds us that Indigenous knowledge could hold answers to modern tech challenges.
🤝 Empowering Communities: Collaborating with Indigenous communities for sustainable tech strengthens cultural bonds.
Intrigued by the idea of data embedded in ecosystems? Let’s keep pushing the boundaries of data storage to create a more sustainable future!

𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 ≠ 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮. While data products can be used as a revenue generator, they often bring value to the organisation that builds and distributes them in different, complementary ways.
Part 2️⃣ - Data for Good
One of the clearest trends we’ve seen in data products in 2024 is the rise of data products with social benefit.
🧑🏽💻 We’ve recently had the pleasure of meeting the team at the Youth Futures Foundation who are reimagining their public data dashboard, to ensure that policy makers and employers who have the means to make direct impactful change for young people and youth unemployment in the UK have the evidence and data to do so.
🛴 We’re currently exploring a smart city mobility project with a public sector organisation in the UK and a manufacturing company in France to make transportation and traffic data - which is notoriously difficult to work with - accessible to the public in both visual and developer-friendly format.
🌳 ESG-focused companies like ESG Book, Kestrix, and namR are building exciting unique datasets that enable investors and lenders to make more responsible decisions, and homebuilders to make more efficient homes.
Data products can go a long way in not just generating revenue, but driving corporate social responsibility and better policy change.

Publicly funded data-driven innovation programmes need to increase their focus on ensuring citizens benefit from projects that use data created by and about them.
