While revisiting some of my old writing, I came across this piece from 2014, written shortly after my wife and I relocated to #Detroit. Reflecting on it now—nearly a decade later—I'm struck by how much this city has transformed and how deeply we’ve rooted ourselves in the vibrant community we’ve built here. The remarkable #renaissance of Detroit continues to inspire and reaffirm my admiration for this incredible city. As a #recruiter, I often meet candidates who seek not only meaningful careers but also a fulfilling quality of life beyond the workplace. With the rise of #remote, #hybrid, and #workfromhome opportunities, I’m republishing this piece as both a reflection and a call to action: Detroit remains a city of immense potential, waiting to welcome those who value connection, culture, and possibility. https://lnkd.in/gPitAMtr

Yesterday was one of my proudest career moments... After 12 months of dedication and collaboration, Oakland unveiled the result of our hard work - a transformation that goes beyond the surface. Involving extensive workshops, client feedback, and getting right to the heart of the Oakland brand. It's not just a design tweak; it's a genuine evolution. With a proposition that we believe will stand out in the sea of sameness - a purpose that not only benefits our team but also adds significant value to our clients. And a revised set of values we didn't think needed changing, which highlights, as an old employer of mine always says, "knowledge before assumption." With the integration of Oakland FutureLab and our cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence service, we continue to deliver tangible business outcomes by staying at the forefront of technology. That's why "Everything Data" isn't just a tagline; it's our promise. As someone with a background in design, I have always believed in the power of design to differentiate. We collaborate with incredibly talented local companies for animation, illustration, video, photography, digital, and design. As a marketer, these opportunities are rare. I am grateful for the trust placed in me by the Oakland Directors, allowing me to collaborate with the people I admire, providing the necessary budget to create exceptional work, and being so positive about the outcomes. After 35 years of living in New York, let me tell you the harsh truth: New York is a big lie. The old mantra, "If I can make it here, I can make it anywhere," has become a trap. People walk around thinking life has to be tough to succeed because it’s the New York way, but that’s just not true anymore. The city’s monopoly on creativity and business is over. You don’t have to live in New York to succeed. Why struggle for the sake of struggle? Changes in culture and technology have made success and fulfillment available everywhere. It’s time to choose your own way. 💎Big Tech and billionaires suddenly can’t resist the lure of South Florida, and while New York can ‘afford to lose some Citadels, it has to learn the lesson’ Big Tech staffers may be swapping out their beloved Patagonia vests for sunglasses and shorts as the sector continues to migrate to warmer climes. Traditionally America’s enterprise hubs have centered around New York and Silicon Valley. But over the past decade, and particularly since the pandemic, Miami has pushed itself up the rankings to become a powerhouse in its own right. The Sunshine State is now home to some of the nation’s highest-profile brands across various industries. In finance, Ken Griffin’s Citadel and Citadel Securities have made Miami their permanent headquarters, while JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon used his annual shareholder letter to highlight the renovation of the company’s Tampa offices and the $210 million it will add to the local economy. The likes of Microsoft, Amazon, and now Apple are also reportedly increasing their presence in the area. The post-pandemic shift of Big Tech companies moving to South Florida began with Microsoft, which announced in 2021 it was moving its Latin America regional team to Miami’s seafront Brickell district. A couple of years later, Amazon announced its hunt for a further 50,000 square feet in the area, following its founder, Jeff Bezos, from Seattle. Bezos announced in November 2023 that he was leaving his longtime home city of Seattle for the ‘billionaire’s bunker‘ of South Florida’s Indian Creek Island, where he now owns three mansions. More recently, it was reported that Apple was joining the tech exodus to Florida, taking 45,000 square feet (4,181 square meters) in a new building in Coral Gables, a wealthy suburb just south of Miami. 💎Thinking of Buying / Selling or Moving to Miami? 🪄Contact me today 📱718-683-6773 📧 [email protected] #design #miami #edgewater #citadel #microsoft #jeffbezos #kengriffin #830brickell #luxurylifestyle #realestatemiami #luxuryhomes #realestate #luxuryrealestate #architecture #forsale #tatianazarubina #theagency #theagencysouthflorida #tatianazarubina

I’ve been asked the question “are you still doing video stuff” more than a few times recently, so I figure I’m due for a quick career update. The short answer is yes, I’m still doing video stuff. I don’t hold the camera as often as I used to, but my team and I produce all kinds of video content for lots of different brands and clients. It is still a deep rooted passion for me. But that is not all we do. In fact, it is only one detail in the bigger picture we’re painting at Doxey Street. For the past two years we have been quietly developing a company that invests in creativity, uncovers strategic solutions and produces meaningful work for ambitious clients. My title is creative director. Yes, I do video stuff. I also design. And write. And lead a small team. But creative thinking is at the center of it all. It is my press pass, my PIN number, my money line. My team is elite. Humble brag. Max Trevino and Harley Knudson are true partners in (legal, above the line) crime, and together we create a formidable core. The hard work we’ve all put in to build Doxey Street has intentionally been a quiet endeavor. That is about to change this summer as we launch our new website, grow our team and begin sharing our own stories. I’ve spent a lot of days in pursuit of one creative endeavor after another. At least that is what I thought, that they were separate endeavors. In truth, they’re all connected and have culminated into what is now Doxey Street. The mission is far from over. In a way… we really haven’t even started. But our DNA is printed, and we know who we are. So, to sum it up: yeah still video stuff, kinda... But the more accurate question is “are you still doing that creative stuff?” To which I say: Hell yes I am. We all are, over on Doxey Street

The bell curve of excitement when a new thing starts is almost the same with every thing that starts. I may have to explain myself. I launched my new book, Main Street Mavericks, in March. I took the low months between holidays to compile all the writings, notes, and posts I had been producing from as early as 2018, about books, conferences, interviews and personal reflections about marrying the worlds of Main Street and Experience Design. I thought a lot about the role of Main Street managers as entrepreneurs themselves, and partners of local businesses. I thought a lot about what those partnerships look like and how district managers can plan, design, and rely on the best local players to build their marketing strategy, and how to find the best local players. It came out as a counterintuitive, complete strategy for setting up the table for the creation of spectacular downtown experiences with outstanding hospitality. Entertaining, nurturing and rewarding downtown experiences built on the strengths of both district managers and business owners. I have had the kindest reviews and the heartfelt support of friends and colleagues, which I'm grateful for. I promoted it during the first few weeks, and it's been selling without much promotion except from very kind plugs by industry greats, that have inspired me to keep working in the mission to design downtown experiences. Still, promotion fell through the cracks and I have been silent for a while re: Main Street Mavericks. Thus the bell curve of excitement reference. Today I was looking through old files and I stumbled upon the press kit that I made and never sent, so I'm just gonna leave it here. I'd love to talk more about the ideas behind Main Street Mavericks. Hit me up if this rings a bell. #mainstreet #downtown #experienceeconomy #economicdevelopment

CITY: New York 🗽 AESTHETIC: ⭐️ Central Park ⭐️ Broadway ⭐️ Times Square ⭐️ Rockefeller Centre ⭐️ The Empire State Building ⭐️ Grand Central Station ⭐️ Chrysler Building ⭐️ Yellow Cabs ⭐️ Sex & The City / F.R.I.E.N.D.S NOT FORGETTING: The Statue of Liberty One of my hobbies/passions is travel. I have been privileged to visit a few major cities. We lived here when the girls were young! I loved it but at the end of our time when we were packing up the house to fly home, something happened that changed the world… Yes, 9/11. I would now say that, as horrendous as that was, it has made NYC part of my personal brand by having the most amazing, humbling and perfect tribute to those who lost their lives. It has always struck me that each city has its own definitive brand. If I mentioned the aesthetics of NYC to you, you’d instantly know it was NYC, right? 🧠 If a city can have their own brand, why can’t you? It’s imperative that YOU find your brand and let your clients know who you are. Once you have a personal brand, you can move forward with branding your business, and anything else that requires your unique stamp ✨ 🔔 Why not take my quiz and discover how your Personal Brand is working for you: https://lnkd.in/e7F2SGAu To find past cities, please search under the hashtag: #cityofyouseries #cityofyou #personalbranding #professionaldevelopment #careervision #leadership #communication #growthmindset #success #SallyInkster #personalbrand P.S. Each one of you will have your own story of where you were that day (9/11). I would love to hear them in the comments! ⬇️

Last weekend, I finally had the chance to get away for a while -- something that I desperately needed! We traveled to St. Louis, and along the way, we found ourselves along a portion of Route 66 in Atlanta, IL, home of the American Giants! Apparently, these giant statues began popping up all over Route 66 as a way to attract business to everything from mom and pop soda shops to national brands. Here I am taking a photo with one of "The Professionals" -- I think he was a tire salesman. I felt that since I'm a career coach, I had to take a pic with the examples from "The Professionals." But, the whole thing really did get me thinking about the legacy I'm leaving through my work. I read that some of the sculptures were only used in advertising campaigns for 2 years before they were quite literally scrapped -- only to be restored to life much later by interested folks. I love the creativity of the advertising campaigns and the interest in art, history, and travel that has brought them back as icons again some 70+ years later. So, what can I get from all of this? Well, it's fun to take pics with giant sculptures, for sure! But, also, remember that there are no failures. Imagine the artisans who constructed these statues, only to see them scrapped a few years later. They probably thought that particular advertising campaign was a failure. They may have DIED thinking that. They probably had no idea that their work would inspire a whole museum and the tourism around a WHOLE TOWN -- a town that has seen visitors from around the world! You might not see what your work produces, but always keep going -- you never know who it will impact. #CareerCoach #LegacyOfWork #Inspiration #Route66 #TravelAndLearn #KeepGoing #ArtAndHistory #CareerJourney #ProfessionalGrowth #NoFailures #CreativityInWork #InspireOthers #TourismAndHistory #Resilience

Published today, my opinion piece in Crain's Chicago Business is making the case for celebrating and investing in Chicago’s culture-makers. I offer a counterpoint to all the pearl-clutching about #Chicago’s reputational challenges. It’s true that my beloved city has been a punching bag for conservative pundits, a byword for urban disorder. But the usual package of solutions — conventions, casinos, sports venues, and the like — aren’t the answer. I argue that cities that are successfully repositioning themselves are those that recognize assets already embedded in communities. Rather than subsidizing stadiums and kowtowing to conventioneers, Chicago ought to be resourcing its extraordinary BIPOC artists and entrepreneurs. They are shaping Chicago’s narrative for the next generation. They serve as global ambassadors for Chicago’s brand. And they are undoubtedly the city’s most valuable asset. Hope this piece gives policymakers and corporate leaders something to think about. Agree or disagree, get at me!
