I often find myself amused by the general perception surrounding award lists like "30 under 30." Not because of the individuals voicing their opinions, but because of the flawed understanding they sometimes bring to the table.
As someone who organizes one of these lists, let me clarify a few things for those quick to criticize:
A) The fee isn't for "buying your spot" on the list. It's a contribution towards the logistical efforts—organizing a celebratory event, trophies, meals, drinks, and more. It's about making the night memorable for all attendees.
B) The idea that you can’t win unless you’re the organizer’s friend is flawed. There’s a jury process in place. Organizers have a show to run, and no show will ever gain public trust if it’s seen as a platform to favor friends and family. You have to take your chances and a leap of faith.
C) For those unwilling to pay a nomination fee but desiring public recognition—let's be honest. If you're not investing in the platform showcasing your achievements, why expect the spotlight? Recognition doesn't come without effort or investment. If your achievements are truly outstanding, they’ll reflect in raises, promotions, and internal acknowledgment.
D) One list of 30 doesn’t serve the entire industry, especially when at least 40% of the workforce is below the age of 30. There ought to be multiple platforms recognizing exceptional individuals, and every such initiative should be appreciated.
E) Some people work tirelessly but don’t nominate themselves because they aren’t natural storytellers. Here’s a word of advice for them: Take a look at the forms for some of these awards. They’re often designed to be simple for this very reason—not everyone is a storyteller. Your straightforward answers to these questions piece together your narrative, one step at a time.
If your boss isn't cheering you on, perhaps it's time to think outside the box to make your efforts known. Public recognition is not an entitlement; it’s a reward for standing out.
On that note, I am very proudly hosting a 40 Under 40 for the PR & Communications industry on November 22nd at the Radisson Hotel, Sector 29, Gurgaon. Looking forward to celebrating the incredible talent in the industry!
