🇨🇦Calgarians are irrate as the City of Calgary says 5 more weeks to fix water main break!🇨🇦 🇨🇦Whether through negligence or incompetence, the City of Calgary will now be responsible for businesses large & small having catastrophic financial losses due to this issue. 🇨🇦Nancy Mackay, Calgary's water services director said today: "If we were to complete current repairs and restore the water feeder main now, it would be at high risk of additional catastrophic breaks.” 🇨🇦"With today's situation, we are now contacting some customers to ask them to stop some operations and some activities if we need to. The city has the ability to turn off water to a business if they are not complying with that ask. This would be a last resort and one we are prepared to take if need be." 🇨🇦What’s clear is that the City of Calgary is out of its league dealing with this issue and they must bring in a new team to deal with this in a timely manner. Whether that be military engineers or experts from private firms. *Source: CBC News - June 14, 2024 #YYC #Calgary #WaterMainBreak
How has this taken that long to figure out there was additional issues with the integrity of the water main? Once the damage was found, the first step was to do additional inspections to ensure that the rest of the system was in compliance and not compromised. More incompetence by this Mayor. This city and province is full of SME’s on piping and pipelines. Pull your head out of your backend Jyoti Gondek get over your lack of integrity, education and bring in people and companies that can solve this problem for Calgary and the surrounding communities dependent on this water supply. Then resign and let’s get some real leadership to ensure this type of situation doesn’t occur again, along with getting Calgary back to where it should be prior to you and Nenshi.
Someone completely missed the point of pipe integrity management and monitoring. This is a sign of something systemically wrong in the system. There are VERY well established systems and processes available to monitor pipes of all sorts to assess their integrity and anticipate they may be weakened. Which is entirely obvious from the fact they just ran a robot drone and determined there were 3 or 4 other spots requiring repair RFN. Where were the previous assessments? Did they not see anything suspicious or the integrity degrading? Were the reports run and not reviewed by technical experts? This is why you run baselines people - you see the changes over time. Somebody needs to have their a$$ handed to them over this one. Completely unacceptable when you have an entire department managing this critical infrastructure. This is something that has been degrading over decades and was completely missed.
We litterally have more pipeline engineers in our city than anywhere else on earth. Let’s leverage the knowledge of this city, admit fault, fix the problems learn from our experts and move on. City hall needs an overhaul.
The incompetence is unbelievable. People need to be fired. There should be redundancies built in.
There are many water pumping businesses in Calgary that can supply an alternative to the water main, until it is fixed.
This is what happens when we hire people to run things, who have no idea on what the priorities should be. Maybe we should get back to the fundamentals of urban planning and management?
Seriously folks do you not think this is by design??
Roll large diameter and thick steel pipe at a company like Edmonton Exchanger- and use it for the repair sections- the current composite system is flakey and almost impossible to repair. Also- run a parallel line with the same design of steel pipe so it is available immediately to handle the volumes required since the concrete and steel flaky joke pipe will keep on failing. Heavy walled steel pipe is already in use to supply fresh river water to the Oil Sands Plants.
Maybe this will convince Calgarians that drinking water availability is more important than "fighting climate change"?

6moCity of Calgary trucks were seen watering boulevards and flower beds…today! Even with rain in the forecast. Glenmore reservoir currently 71% and holding. Expect after this weekend it will break mid 80% mark. Rules for thee but not for me, hey? Sounds familiar but we aren’t buying it. Ever again.
