When stepping into UX leadership, there are many common and interrelated leadership development opportunities that come up, often in rapid fire succession. Included here: some common themes and tips on how to navigate changes and move beyond one's own comfort zones into the new territory, for the success of your team and organization. ✔️ Becoming a UX and Design Advocate: As a design leader, you may need to bridge the gap between design and non-designer audiences, such as stakeholders and executives. This involves advocating for the value of design in achieving business objectives and promoting customer-centric approaches. ✔️ Design Team Coaching and Building: This involves a new focus on being responsible for building and coaching your the team capabilities and its overall contribution to the organization and customer experience. This includes defining roles, hiring the right talent, and creating career trajectories for team members. ✔️ Mastering One-to-Many Communication: Your role will shift from one-on-one communication to mastering one-to-many communication strategies. This is crucial for effectively conveying design principles, strategies, and decisions to larger audiences within your organization. ✔️ Cultivating Collaboration Across Teams: You'll evolve from leading a single design team to proactively fostering collaboration across different teams and departments. ✔️ Indirect Management: Your role may shift from direct management of individual contributors to overseeing other leaders and managers who manage their own teams. These managers become your indirect reports, and you'll need to provide guidance and support to ensure alignment with your vision. ✔️ Embracing Broader Business Context: Design leaders need to look beyond departmental or organizational boundaries and understand how their team's work fits into the broader context of the company's goals. ✔️ Adapting to Rapid Contextual Shifts: Design leaders must be adaptable and capable of shifting their focus from strategic, high-level thinking to granular details related to delivery, budgeting, and operational considerations. These evolutions reflect the dynamic nature of design leadership, where you need to balance your UX design discipline expertise with broader general leadership and management skills that span across disciplines. #userexperience #designleadership #productdesign

Every business is a people business, never mind the widgets. You might think your company is all about software or manufacturing or investing. Guess what? Every business hinges on talent. We are all in the people business. How we work together to serve and deliver to clients is the key to business success. Taking on a leadership role means you are a developer of talent. Not a commander or an overseer of widgets. One of my roles as an internal technology consultant devolved to managing Gantt charts and ticking boxes on project plans, chasing owners to tell a good story, but the real impact in that role was created in the conversations with users and business heads to find the needle-in-the-haystack development that would transform their business. It took me more than a minute to lift my head from the project plan to prioritize the people connection instead. A people leader. Meant to inspire, develop, nurture, coach, elevate, challenge and stretch your people as your most valuable assets. Taking the time to connect with, listen to, rerecruit, and reenroll every member of your team always pays off. Culture destroyers and perpetual underperformers can hold back the whole team, so address them directly, head on, fairly and swiftly. Being clear is kind and the courageous conversation should not be avoided. No matter how deep your technical subject matter expertise, it will be your leadership of talent that will be most responsible for your success. #people #peoplebusiness #mostvaluableasset #talent #relationships #connection #engagement #leadership #enablement #coaching #executivecoaching

Check out one of the very first videos I did some time back 👇 Design Thinking is a very simple five-step Action Plan that deals with COMPLEX problem-solving. First, we need to understand traditional problem-solving: Deals with a very specific problem Get a very specific answer Using a specific formula But know that 99.9% of all real-life problems do not deal with this (way of problem-solving)!🤯🤯 So my job is to share view this proven methodology that's impacted so many organizations right now and it's based on 3 areas: 1️⃣ It allows you to understand your situation better through empathy. 2️⃣ It allows you to explore and iterate 3️⃣ It delivers results (to you and your organisations) ________________ 👋🏻 I'm Daniel Ling- design leader in the financial and e-commerce industry and author of Design Thinking Guide for Successful Professionals 👆🏻 Click my name + follow + 🔔 for more posts on Design Thinking, Innovation, Strategy and Design Leadership. 👍🏻 Like or repost this to your network if you learned something new about this post. 🤘🏻 Get 222-page FREE BOOK (Pay Only Shipping) via my profile link 👀 Save this post to review and reflect later! #design #networking #designthinking #innovation #leadership #coaching #creativity #designleadership #designleaders #mentorship #reflection #designcommunity
