Innovation takes many forms. I attended an oddities event here in South Florida this past weekend with a dear friend, and was most amused by these alligator dolls. I mean, look at it! She looks ready for a picnic! 🤣😂 Hilarious. I was also tickled pink by the innovation of the product. A simple, common product, a porcelain doll, was altered with a real alligator head to create an unexpected, laughter inducing (yes, evn the maker giggled too) decorative item. This lady looked at dolls and thought, "you know what would be hilarious!?..." And she makes money with them. These are folks that we need in our organizations! Not every hire needs to be innovation minded, but we do need them in our midst... and we need to be listening to them. How do we make time for innovation? We schedule time for it! Support your team in scheduling an hour or two for innovation a couple of times per month. Then, schedule monthly or quarterly innovation meetings at which they can present their work and update you on progress of current active innovation projects. I also recommend a bonus and career advancement plan for those who contribute ideas that are put into action. This allows for continual growth, new product development, increased client satisfaction, higher team retention (when people are engaged and are making an impact they stay longer), and ultimately higher profits.
