We had a great event yesterday, a ribbon cutting and open house for the major new front addition to Silver Creek High School in Sellersburg. This was one of the best attended ribbon cuttings I've been to, a lot of future students stopped by to check out the new building during the open house. One Southern Indiana did a great job hosting, big thanks to Lance Allison, CCE, IOM and his team. Great speeches were made by school superintendent Chad Briggs, school board chair Chris Rountree and Sellersburg's Charlie Smith. The Silver Creek school team, school board and community worked hard together to earn this moment. The project is one of the biggest for Shireman Construction Management in our history, at $66M. It's been an going really well. The construction team finished three months ahead of schedule on the more than two dozen new classrooms and vaulted "Dragons Den." I'll attach some photos. (This addition used to be a little used courtyard and parking lot.) The design is by CSO Architects, engineering by Shrout Tate Wilson Mechanical & Electrical Engineers and the prime contractor for this phase is Calhoun Construction Services. Finishing up next is the new Auditorium, which is 80% complete and will come on line in February. Now that we have more space to move classrooms around we are able to move forward with the final phase to renovate the rest of the existing 1960-era building - including creating cool spaces like the new modern culinary arts teaching kitchen, Project Lead the Way STEM spaces, and modern science labs. We hope to have this project wrapped up next fall well ahead of schedule and under budget.

Peering through the misted glass of the classroom window, condensation slowly dripping onto the wooden ledge, many of us recall the familiar feeling of daydreaming about what a new school might be like. Those childhood memories are often triggered by different sights, sounds, and smells, transporting us back to the days spent in class with friends and teachers. Whether it was the excitement of wheeling in the tall TV on a Friday afternoon to watch the latest episode of "How It's Made," or the rush to be the first to volunteer to clean the chalkboard, school life was full of small moments that made a big impact. Who could forget the potent aroma of the canteen food, the clatter of plastic trays, or the struggle to poke a straw into a carton of milk without spilling it on the pale grey, foldable dining tables? Nostalgia has a way of bringing these memories back, and as we think about the past, we're also reminded of the importance of the future. hub South West Scotland’s CEO, Michael Ross, recently visited our Lanarkshire project, #OrbistonCommunityHub, in partnership with Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure and North Lanarkshire Council, to check on the progress of this remarkable build. This collaboration with Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure and North Lanarkshire Council is more than just a construction project—it’s an investment in the future, providing hope and support for the communities in #Bellshill, #Lanarkshire and beyond. We send huge thanks to the incredible design team, Architect - Keppie Design, Civil & Structural Engineer – Curtins and Service team – RSP Consulting Engineers for playing a key part in this momentous project. We can't wait to see the finished results. As we look forward to the opening of this innovative new school, we can imagine the new memories that will be created there, continuing the legacy of education and community for generations to come. #Localconstruction #Lanarkshire #Build #Nostalgia #workinginpartnership #buildingschoolsandrelationships

At Xavier College’s historic Senior Campus on Barkers Road, Kew, the new Kostka Building represents a harmonious blend of tradition and modern innovation. This state-of-the-art facility is designed to welcome 500 Year 7 and 8 students as part of the Central Precinct Development, which also includes the redevelopment of the iconic Chapel Oval. Our NSW State Manager Timothy Devlin had the pleasure to visit the site earlier this year and was in thrilled with the project! Overlooking the College’s Memorial Chapel, the Kostka Building serves as a nurturing and inspiring environment for young learners. The design incorporates a variety of ultramodern spaces, including classrooms for arts, science, and technology, a chapel, drama space, and staff facilities, all while maintaining a connection to the College’s rich heritage. Theca Timber played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life, providing essential expertise and materials for the project. By supplying Glulam portals and CLT slabs, Theca Timber ensured that the building met the highest standards of sustainability and structural integrity. Their involvement from the early stages of design allowed for a seamless integration of mass timber, aligning perfectly with Xavier College’s commitment to sustainability and green credentials. The Kostka Building is more than just an educational facility; it is a testament to Xavier College’s dedication to preserving its legacy while embracing the future. With the support of Theca Timber, this project stands as a shining example of how thoughtful design and sustainable practices can create a space that honours the past while inspiring future generations. #ThecaTimber #ThecaSustainability #madeinitalybuiltinaustralia #Melbourne #designexcellence #timberconstruction #sustainability #EngineeringExcellence #SustainableDesign #ArchitecturalDesign #TimberEngineering #InnovativeConstruction #ArchitecturalEngineering #TimberStructures #XavierCollege Client: Ireland Brown Constructions Pty Ltd Architect: MGS Architects Engineers: WSP in Australia Timber Supplier: Rubner Grandi strutture in legno Services: Detailed design up to LOD400, Structural Engineering, Fabrication, Delivery to site Completion: 2023

Another great project to be a part of with one of my old mentor Nima Arjomandnia, PE, PMP. Our most challenging design tasks included: 1) Cutting large (up to ~50ft x 26ft) openings through existing concrete pan-joist floor systems for new monumental steel stairs: 1a) Reinforcing the remaining existing concrete floor joists for the stair loads with concrete jackets and FRP. 1b) Designing the monumental steel stairs for vibrations per Design Guide 11. 1c) Providing a new skylight in the new roof opening. 2) Designing an entirely new steel frame gym expansion. 3) Replacing a large portion of the existing roof, requiring extensive steel joist reinforcement. 4) Designing new steel supports for solar panels over a new parking lot with sloping steel columns. 5) Providing facade support for the complete re-skinning of the building.
I am so honored to have been a part of the amazing team that was recognized with a 2024 AIA Education Facility Design Award at this year's Awards Gala. Past Project Highlight: Pottsboro High School and Pottsboro Elementary School storm shelter additions were recently completed in partnership with WRA Architects, Inc. Storm shelters often come with unique challenges, as student & staff safety was our top priority. From an operational standpoint, back-up power, ventilation, and maintaining the integrity of the storm shelter envelope are considerations that received careful attention. Ventilation in particular carried additional challenges for each of the locations, and a different approach was incorporated at each location. The layout of the high school shelter was conducive to a louver-based system; while the physical location of the elementary school addition, sitting between the existing elementary and the existing intermediate school, initiated a purely mechanical system. #stormshelter #architecture #design
