The June 2024 release of ArcGIS Field Maps is now live! This update focused on key usability improvements for map authors using Field Maps Designer and several stability/performance improvements to the Mobile app. My top picks: - the breadth of content validation checks available in the Offline tab. A key theme for 2024 is improving offline use. The checks are critical to successful offline use. - filtering the list of maps by folder. Folders are the drawers in your digital map cabinet and now you can just have one drawer open at a time if you want. - improved support for read-only maps. Field maps adapts to the capabilities of your map. There is a lot you can do with read-only maps and a Viewer user type. Now in Designer you know what maps are for read-only use and which are for data capture. Everyone in your organization should be using Field Maps to view maps. Make it happen! https://lnkd.in/g6wB887N #esri #FieldMaps #ConnectedWorker

Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) are a smart blend of standard web pages and mobile applications, aiming to offer the best of both worlds. Unlike traditional apps, PWAs leverage the strengths of modern web browsers and the convenience of mobile experiences. Back in 2015, Frances Berriman, a designer, and Alex Russell, a Google Chrome engineer, introduced the term "Progressive Web Apps." These apps utilize advanced browser features such as Service Workers and Web App Manifests. These technologies empower web apps to level up and function like fully-fledged native applications on various operating systems. PWAs exhibit several key attributes as outlined by Google Developers: Progressive: They cater to all users, regardless of their browser preference, thanks to their foundation in progressive enhancement principles. Responsive: These apps adapt gracefully to any screen size, whether it's a desktop, mobile, tablet, or an emerging form factor. Connectivity Independent: Service Workers enable offline functionality and work seamlessly even on weak network connections. App-like: PWAs provide users with an app-like experience, including interactions and navigation, resembling the feel of traditional applications. Fresh: The service worker update process ensures that PWAs always remain up-to-date. Safe: To prevent unauthorized access and tampering, PWAs are delivered over HTTPS, ensuring secure content delivery. Discoverable: Thanks to W3C manifests and service worker registration scope, PWAs are recognizable as applications, making them easily discoverable by search engines. Re-engageable: Features like push notifications make it effortless for users to re-engage with PWAs. Installable: Users can add PWAs to their home screens without the complexities associated with traditional app stores. Linkable: PWAs can be shared using simple URLs, eliminating the need for intricate installation processes. In a nutshell, Progressive Web Apps combine the best elements of websites and mobile apps. They adapt to various devices, work offline, provide app-like experiences, ensure security, and offer easy installation and sharing. This innovative approach revolutionizes how we interact with online content, seamlessly merging the benefits of both web and mobile technologies. #webdevelopment #progressivewebapps

What is a Web App? A Quick Guide for Developers Web apps are browser-based applications that offer dynamic content and platform independence. They're typically: - Runnable on any device - Internet-dependent (at least initially) - Built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript Popular examples include Gmail, Google Docs, and Trello. But what's not a web app? Native mobile/desktop apps, CLI tools, and simple static websites don't qualify. When building web apps, consider: 1. Client-side vs. server-side rendering: Choose based on your app's needs, not just trendy tech pushes. 2. Loading times: First load (~7-8s) and subsequent loads (~1s) are usually acceptable for apps used for extended periods. 3. Hybrid approach: Consider using a SEO-friendly website to market your product, with a web app for the main functionality. Remember: Focus on your specific app requirements rather than following every new trend. Make decisions based on your users' needs, not on what big tech companies are pushing.
