#Cancer #Drug Development Cut Short by the #IRA A terrific (and disturbing) post by Brian Reid suggesting that Novartis put the kibosh on the potential development of additional indications for its #CML drug, #Scemblix, because of the #InflationReductionAct. According to CEO Vas Narasimhan (via Brian): “our ability to develop beyond CML and another #rarecancer is limited because of the #IRA's policy.” The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services went out off their way, in selecting the first 10 drugs “for negotiation”, to include Johnson & Johnson’s cancer drug #IMBRUVICA®. It was a strong move out of the gate to show a willingness—even an eagerness—to use its #pricecontrol leverage against a highly effective cancer drug—notwithstanding the cancer community’s #policy and #advocacy punch. #HHS and #CMS wanted to send a message—and they did. Eisai and Bristol Myers Squibb have terminated their collaboration on farletuzumab ecteribulin, a dual-acting drug for lung and ovarian cancer. This move follows Bristol Myers Squibb's portfolio prioritization efforts announced in April.
