Is there still value in wine competitions?
‘You need to understand why you're entering. If you don’t know the reason, it’s just a lottery,’ says wine expert, entrepreneur and founder of Rascallion Wines, Ross Sleet.
Drawing on his decades of experience in the ever-changing South African wine industry, Sleet stresses that researching the right competitions and knowing your goals are key to long-term success. He was one of our panelists in a discussion about leveraging competitions in a fiercely competitive landscape.

🍷I had an amazing conversation with Paul Kalemkiarian about my journey into the wine industry, the creation of Fly Wines, and where I see the future of the industry heading. 🚀 We explored both the challenges and exciting opportunities facing independent wineries as they carve out their place in the wine world.
Tune in to learn more about the evolution of the wine industry and what’s on the horizon for Fly Wines! 🍇🍷

Something exciting is happening: Ricochet Wine Co. is building out its own winery! What does this mean?
1) We are looking for friends and family who want to grab a share on this project. We need the help to make this a place to make wine, and to showcase the work of Ricochet and small-batch friends. We have a vision. DM for an investor proposal.
2) More importantly, if you are a small winery or someone who want to get into the wine biz, I have space for both Alternating Proprietor and Custom Crush options. $1800/ton for AP; negotiated custom-crush options based on project and winemaker.
It's exciting and daunting. But it's gonna be good. Would love to have folks involved. Because that's been the Ricochet ethos from Day One.

Complacency: Word of the Decade (or should we say ‘the last generation’?)
The current reset in the global wine economy is a painful reminder of what happens when we “get comfortable”.
When we live with the adage;
“If you want to stop growing, get comfortable.”….
….then and only then do we see vibrancy in ideas, technology, innovation, excellence, and persistent growth.
The wine industry’s worst enemy lies in the term, ”good enough”.
Ask Bordeaux producers with their stacking up of what may be unsellable excellence.
Ask the Australians whether their industry wide plan was or is ‘good enough’ (although I have been historically impressed by the Australian wine industry’s tenacious planning compared to the lack of such ‘plans’ in other wine producing nations, including the U.S.).
One doesn’t have to travel too far down the roads of any California wine region to either see the devastation of “Complacency”.
Vineyard land ‘For Sale’ signs dotting the landscape and daily springing up like weeds flourishing in the sun of spring after a wet rainy season.
Complacency….now is the mother of opportunity…unless your business is weighted down by the complacency of the last 20 years.
Opportunities?
Oh yes!!
The failures and price reductions and dumping of wine into the markets and a myriad of yet unforeseen event are only beginning to give us indications of the changes coming to wine.
But if you’re family or business is generationally minded…..
If your business is legacy focused….
If each of us personally are strategically thinking….
THEN this is the most exciting time in modern wine history, possibly since the repeal of prohibition in the US.
Here’s a thought for us all to end on a value note:
“Land. They don’t make it anymore.” ~ Mark Twain
The reset is going to release land into the market that has not been available and is a welcome refreshment to those who have worked hard and now looking for an opportunity to connect to “dirt”.
Add to this equation one more thing:
Over 25% of all winery and vineyard owners in California do not have a legacy plan and are aging out.
It’s time for a whole new set of dreamers to jump in and carry the torch into the next generation….and what an opportunity it is at what will be bargain basement prices.

Our team keeps its fingers on the pulse of the latest trends in the wine and spirits industry. Luciana is one of our resident wine experts; she recently completed Levels I & II Award in Wines from the WSET (The Wine & Spirit Education Trust). So it’s fitting she has a perspective on what’s shaping the wine industry in 2024.
“While the wine market at large may be experiencing a slowdown, I believe that sparkling wines will continue to defy this trend in 2024, maintaining the momentum they’ve built over the past decade. Additionally, I think we will see a rise in popularity for premium yet lesser-known sparkling wine regions, such as Franciacorta in Italy and the South East of England, as consumers look for variety in their sparkling wine choices.”
