Daily Financial Risk Story - 5: Money laundering and Fraud in Healthcare and Pharmaceutical industry. The Insys Therapeutics scandal is a powerful example of how fraud can occur in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. Insys, a pharmaceutical company, developed a painkiller called Subsys, which was a fentanyl-based spray meant for cancer patients with extreme pain. However, instead of only selling it for that purpose, the company went to great lengths to sell the drug to patients who didn’t need it. To do this, Insys bribed doctors by paying them large amounts of money to prescribe Subsys to patients who didn’t have cancer or the severe pain it was meant to treat. These payments were disguised as “speaking fees,” but in reality, they were kickbacks to push the drug. On top of that, the company lied to insurance companies by falsely claiming that patients needed Subsys for serious conditions, so the insurance would cover the drug. This allowed the company to make millions of dollars from unnecessary prescriptions. The scheme was eventually uncovered when whistleblowers came forward, and investigations revealed the depth of the fraud. Top executives, including the founder of the company, were found guilty of serious crimes, and the company went bankrupt. Happy Halloween!!! I remember years ago, when I couldn't go trick or treating because of the razors people would be putting in candy. I am dating myself, lol It started to become common practice to check halloween candy for razors. Disgusting people doing this. As a parent I can't imagine having to worry about razors in candy and now having cannibis being added to a candy bar. Furthermore, there is street cannibis that is laced with fentanyl. The #pharmacist was billing #Medicare for prescription drugs that were never dispensed to beneficiaries and instead were diverted to the black market. Pharmacists: How can you spot and avoid fraudulent schemes? 💊 Check the date on the prescription. Ensure it has been presented within a reasonable time. 💊 Verify the doctor’s information (including DEA number) if it is not familiar 💊 Telephone the prescriber for verification or clarification if you have any questions. The patient should give a plausible reason for any discrepancy before you dispense the drug. 💊 If you are in doubt, request proper identification; doing so increases an offender’s risk of getting caught. 💊 If you believe a prescription is forged or altered, do not dispense it – call the local police. Prescription drug fraud is investigated aggressively. The FBI, DEA, Texas Attorney General’s Office, Texas’ Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU), the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General (USPS-OIG), HHS-OIG, the DOJ, and other agencies all play roles in collecting evidence and prosecuting fraud allegations. It appears that the same individuals and groups who are lobbying for and representing large cannabis and medical corporations, as well as specific smaller businesses in Minnesota, are also the ones influencing the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) by pushing specific bill language, rules, and regulations. I won't be naming any specific individuals or entities at this time, but suggest those who are concerned should consider reaching out to the OCM or start requesting public data from them. The level of influence these groups have over the OCM is shocking. The OCM’s apparent lack of experience in the cannabis industry could be intentional, potentially allowing these “advocates” to control the office. In the previous year, skepticism about this situation led to my being labeled as a conspiracy theorist, despite having 28 years of experience in fraud investigation within the insurance industry. However, the perception seems to be shifting this year. It’s important to continue questioning and seeking transparency in these matters. The future of craft cannabis and a free market depends on it.
