Tokyo is one of the most fascinating cities I’ve been to. It’s a great city to study. From its dense urbanism and hyperactive districts to its quirky neighborhoods, it can provide some instructive lessons for urban sustainability (+ and - lessons). And, how that sustainability manifests itself in architectural and urban form. https://lnkd.in/gD7XcmKw

There's something nostalgic about reminiscing on the days when I was deeply rooted in a neighborhood community. A familiar nod from the barista at the local cafe, the warmth of the hardware store owner calling you by name - these simple interactions fostered a profound sense of belonging. However, as I've embraced a nomadic lifestyle, constantly changing destinations, that cozy neighborhood feeling has often felt elusive amidst the exhilaration of new experiences. Reading about the incredible, tight-knit neighborhoods flourishing around the world kindles a longing to recreate that comforting camaraderie. From the centuries-old walkable villages of Europe to the urban enclaves of major cities, where locally-owned businesses breed community pride, the allure of an established neighborhood resonates. Yet, the modern nomad need not lament the loss of that cohesive spirit. Innovative trends and grassroots movements are emerging to conjure that neighborhood ambiance, even amidst transience. Community dinners and "stranger suppers" invite strangers to break bread, fostering connection. Global membership clubs offer instant local houses to join, allowing nomads to tap into an readymade network wherever they roam. Moreover, the rise of co-living spaces beckons long-term stays, where one can meaningfully integrate into the rhythms of a locale over weeks or months. Or perhaps "slowing down" the nomadic lifestyle, settling into each destination more deliberately, is key to organically cultivating a neighborhood rapport. While the nomadic path may be less trodden, it need not sacrifice that grounding sense of community us humans so dearly crave. By staying curious, open, and engaging in locally-embedded experiences, we can mold our own neighborhood narratives into this modern journey or perhaps time to search for a real new neighborhood. Check some incredible choices. #global #neighborhoods #community #strangersuppers #coworking

I had a great opportunity to study current planning and open space practice in Barcelona in late May, with Barcelona Field School - City Lab Barcelona. Great colleagues and leadership for the program, which showed the challenges of urbanism that were familiar, surprising, shared and very specific. No surprise, but Superblocks are a lot more complicated than a diagram, and generate a lot of different perspectives, in a city that is also reckoning with the weight of global tourism. https://lnkd.in/gtaN7tkt

LA VILLE DE DEMAIN Philippe Panerai was a great French urban planner, defender of the plot of land and the structured island as the main element of the urban fabric and the construction of the city. In his studies he brilliantly explains the evolutionary urban models through the study of cities such as New York, Amsterdam, Paris, Barcelona. The city is constantly divided into plots incorporating new functions, activities, building types, new users and social stratification. In his last book, published before his death in 2023, La ville de demain, he leaves us with a final post-covid reflection, in which he proclaims the death of the plot and the ilot in the face of the real estate macrolot and the loss of urban wealth that have characterized the construction in the first years of this 21st century. The possibility of decentralization towards smaller cities that the new post-covid era has generated, allows us to rethink the model once again. It also allows us to rethink whether we have to occupy it all or whether it is better to preserve. Paying attention to the voids is sometimes better than filling in all the gaps because of the high development costs that can be involved in a transformation today. There are many models and urban types in the history of cities that we can recover. We must open the Cerdá block in Barcelona and in those places that this structure has been applied. We have to bring water to the cities in a natural way and open all those lungs of life through small micro-urbanism operations. Apply new, more natural materials to the city that allow these waters to flow. Let's recover old traces, let's use the winds, the shadows, the reliefs.
