💭 You Must Continue to Develop If you're a competitive athlete with high aspirations, you’ve likely been told you need to continue developing your game. Whether that feedback was about a specific skill or something more general, today we’re going to focus on one critical question: What does it mean to develop as an athlete? To develop means to grow, mature, and advance. Athletes can develop in many ways—whether it’s enhancing their skills, athleticism, perception, decision-making, leadership, or other traits that contribute to their team’s success. Every athlete has their own journey. When do you stop developing? Never. Even at the highest levels, the best pro athletes are constantly developing. If you’re serious about your craft, you need to adopt a growth mindset. As HBR defines it, “People with a growth mindset believe their talents can be developed through hard work, good strategies, and input from others.” No matter how good you may be, the best always find ways to continue growing. Having a growth mindset means putting aside your ego and the belief that you’re a “finished product.” A story that’s always stuck with me (👋 Matt here): During my first week at Maryland, Coach Tillman taught me how to catch and throw with proper form. At first, my ego took a hit. I was embarrassed. But that was my first lesson at Maryland—realizing how much room I had to grow. It was a humbling experience, but one that paid dividends throughout my career. Development requires discomfort. If you’re staying in your comfort zone during training, you’re likely not moving the needle. When Coach Tills taught me to refine my technique, I felt awkward and even like I’d taken steps backwards. But after consistently training that way my freshman fall, my stickwork was as clean and efficient as ever. The higher you go, the more the little things matter. At the D1 or pro level, a fraction of a second off your catch-and-release time can make all the difference. If you’re not willing to let go of your ego and embrace the discomfort, you’ll miss out on the opportunity to grow. Be extremely coachable. When a coach gives you feedback, try to implement it, no matter how challenging or uncomfortable. Then, after practice, go home and work on that uncomfortable part of your game until it feels natural. When the uncomfortable becomes comfortable, that’s when you know you’re developing. This takes time and resilience, but once you form a habit of turning discomfort into growth, your potential is limitless. We believe no one is ever a finished product—whether as an athlete or a person. With the right mindset and guidance, we can always move closer to becoming the player and person we aspire to be. The next time you receive feedback to improve, take a deep breath and check in with yourself. Does your ego feel offended or discouraged? Try to lean into that discomfort. It might just be your greatest opportunity to grow into the player and person you want to be.
