Theater Alliance was so pleased to join Booz Allen Hamilton at The Anthem for their Booz Allen Excellence Awards! The talented team of Theater Alliance artists and youth "brought the magic" to the evening of WOW led by Natalie Ade, Kari Merkel, and team. Arts organizations get asked to perform at these kind of events all the time - and as an artistic leader, we get asked to make those decisions. For me, the question always comes down to #values. Does the organization align with our values of integrity, diversity, and excellence? Does the organization value artists? Does the organization live their values? With #BoozAllenHamilton, the answer was a resounding YES. Even in the first conversation about the event, we didn't talk about what they needed or how to make all their dreams come true on a tiny budget. Instead, we talked about what they believe in and what we believe in - we talked about the WHY of our organizations. We’re quick to show gratitude to others. But how often do we turn that appreciation inward? Recently, I received an award for a two-day team-building program I conducted for a manufacturing company. This recognition felt different. I’ve received numerous accolades before, but I rarely shared them. I was always focused on the next goal, the “do more” mindset that kept me from pausing to celebrate my achievements. This time, I decided to change that. Here’s what I realized: “It’s tough to reach new goals if I don’t appreciate what I’ve already accomplished.” Self-appreciation isn’t just about boosting your ego—it’s about motivating yourself to keep moving forward. It’s about recognizing your efforts and building a foundation of self-love that drives you toward greater success. Why does every Oscar speech focus on the people who helped them get there, instead of the person accepting the award? It’s because high achievers recognize that they could never have done it on their own. This is why surrounding yourself with the right people is crucial. Does that mean you have to cut down on everyone who won’t help in accelerating your success in your life? Certainly not. Let them be in your life if you want to, but most importantly surround yourself with the right pack. Find new people who can hold your hand in your success journey. Find the right people who will have your back during tiring times. Find success-hungry people who will push you to do better. Find people who can tell you the hard truth. Reflecting on yesterday’s Achievers Recognition Next conference, I’m feeling energized and encouraged on the state of recognition. Loved the opportunity to knowledge-share with other leaders in the field and hear about what’s working and what’s lagging. Some high-level takeaways for me: - ⤵️ Top-down recognitions have never been more important in making employees feel valued and appreciated. - 💸 Recognition is linked to key business outcomes, productivity and retention; not leveraging available options means leaving money on the table! - 🤝 Decouple rewards from recognition. Recognition doesn’t need to be monetary to be significant. - 🎯 Make sure your recognitions are specific, meaningful and authentic. “Thanks” isn’t going to cut it! - 🔐 An organization’s purpose and values should remain the same but everything else is subject to change. It feels strange not to trumpet achievements, especially milestones like being recognized as Staff Member of the Year. Truth be told, I received the award a while back, and while the initial excitement was real, I held back from sharing it here. Why? Perhaps a fear of bragging, wanting the focus to remain on the team's work, or maybe (dare I say) a touch of imposter syndrome.   Looking back, that hesitation feels wrong. This award isn't a brag; it's a testament to the incredible team I work with at CPG-KFUPM | College of Petroleum Engineering & Geosciences, the inspiring leaders who guide us, and the supportive network that empowers us all. It's also, ultimately, a message to YOU.   This recognition wasn't about individual brilliance, but about dedication, collaboration, and a shared hunger to grow. That hunger, the relentless pursuit of improvement, is what truly fuels success.   So, if this delayed announcement serves as a nudge, a spark to ignite your own journey of growth, then the silence was worth it. Remember, striving for more isn't about external validation; it's about pushing your boundaries, learning from setbacks, and celebrating the collective wins along the way.   Let's not wait for applause to propel us forward. Let the pursuit of excellence, in whatever form it takes for you, be the driving force.
