The book of Accelerate by authors is absolutely a must read for any software related person, even indirectly, via managing software related people. It describes how the technical (more precisely DevOps) craftsmanship in code delivery shapes the company's effectiveness and profitability. Authors in a very detailed and careful way examine how companies handle 4 key indicators: “Lead time for changes”, “Deployment frequency”, “Mean time to restore”, “Change failure rate” as well as what makes them optimize and what not. They also prove that those indicators are great proxies to say if the company will be over-successful in its profitability and market level valuation. All of those examinations are not based on personal beliefs and habits of the writers, but on hard data sourced from over 2k companies and over 20k surveys. Then authors expose standards that make those KPIs rise: from very technical ones (e.g. loosely coupled sw architectural components) to very cultural ones (e.g. focus on issues that happened, not people, that did it or transformative leadership). The book is also full of methodological explanations and case studies proving what works and what does not. This book gives very solid fundamentals to what actual modern software engineering is - with a bit of sadness, I have to say, that I rarely met my management to be acknowledged with that book and ideas standing behind it. "Kill It With Fire: Manage Aging Computer Systems (and Future Proof Modern Ones)" by Marianne Bellotti was such a good read. I came for the old systems and stayed for one of the better socio-technical discourses outside of books dedicated to the topic. She weaves an engaging balance between history, anecdotes, behavioral science, and practical approaches. It's rare I'd recommend a book I read to everyone in technology. I recommend anybody (product, project, engineer, architect, leader) read this one. TL;DR Legacy doesn't mean old and bad. Legacy means useful and venerable. Software is an organism maintained (or not) by the behaviors of an organization which is comprised of individual incentives. PS If you are in the mood for more old code and less behavior try "Working Effectively with Legacy Code" by Michael Feathers
