“Turning Setbacks into Stepping Stones" A few months ago, I was thrilled to be shortlisted for an opportunity that I felt like my dream job. Everything seemed to be going well—I passed the exam, which many found difficult, and felt confident about my interview. I was full of hope, believing that I would be selected. But life had other plans. I wasn’t chosen. The rejection hit me hard, leaving me feeling defeated and questioning everything. Yet, in the same month of that setback, I was reminded that life doesn’t stop moving forward. My university selected me as a role model for graduating students, recognizing my journey as an example of success. Today, I received another incredible honor: the Ministry of Higher Education, Research & Innovation has chosen my innovation to be presented in front of H.E. Dr. Khamis bin Saif Al-Jabri, Chairman of the Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-up Unit. My innovation aligns with Oman Vision 2040, a vision rooted in sustainability, environmental responsibility, and economic diversification—values I deeply believe in. Rejection is not the end. It’s a redirection. What feels like a door closing may actually be paving the way for a bigger opportunity to showcase your potential and purpose. I recently watched an episode of Arab Cast on YouTube, hosted by the ever-insightful Jamal Almulla, a renowned content creator and poet. He interviewed Fuad Mansoor Sharaf, Managing Director of Majid Al Futtaim's UAE Shopping Malls, and it was a masterclass in leadership and talent development. Fuad’s approach to #Emiratization was remarkable. He’s not just hiring Emiratis to meet the expectations of the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation; he’s building a solid foundation for long-term leadership. Every mall they operate is now led by Emiratis, demonstrating a deep commitment to cultivating local talent. This is not a short-term success! It's about setting the stage for a future led by capable, homegrown leaders. His focus on on-the-job training really resonated with me. While theory has its place, there’s no substitute for practical experience. Fuad explained that Majid Al Futtaim hires into challenging roles and provides structured, guided opportunities for them to develop gradually. This builds capability and confidence, allowing young leaders to grow in a supportive environment. What stood out the most was Fuad’s distinction between leadership and management. As he put it, a leader creates more leaders, while a manager focuses on tasks. Authentic leadership empowers others to take ownership, make decisions, and learn from successes and failures. I fully agree with this concept. This approach benefits individuals and elevates the entire organization.
