𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲   Many things go into getting to know yourself and the role you want to play in life.   I love Star Trek. I'm also a history buff. These two may not seem to have much in common but they can be very helpful in getting clarity on your path in life.   Try this exercise:   Imagine you: - Are part of your favourite Star Trek crew - Have settled on Dune - Are traveling with Vasco Da Gama - Live in a medieval village   Or any other scenario in a sci-fi, fantasy or historical setting. Day-dream.   Who would you be? What role do you have in society? Think about it, and don't limit yourself to actual characters or historical figures.   Take your time and picture yourself walking around, meeting other people, and so on. Try it a few times if you can't get into it immediately.   Who and what came to mind? How can you translate that person's role to your own life?   It works because the alien situation you are picturing, gives you that little bit of distance that enables insights.    PS: What's your favourite alien? If there's one guide to delivery management that every Product Manager and Engineering Manager should watch it is Star Trek Lower Decks Buffer Time. Star Fleet lower decks crews have long used 'buffer time' to relax between jobs. When this is revealed (by Boimler) to Captain Freeman she institutes the "Temporal Edict", with time deadlines for all tasks in the belief they will become the most efficient ship in the fleet. Rapidly the ship descends into chaos as the crew struggles to meet the deadlines and quotas. It wasn’t until I sat down and worked out my Ikigai that I understood what I wanted for my life and business. What do I love? What am I good at? What does the world need? What can I be paid for doing? They’re all pretty basic questions - and they’re not that hard to answer if you’re really honest about it. Here’s how it went for me. I love Star Trek I am good at talking The world needs saving from itself. I can be paid to teach people things. Now Star Trek is not something that they world needs, nor can I see how I can be paid for it. But what is it about Star Trek that I love so much? It’s about hope for a better future than the present we have today. It’s about how we can overcome nearly anything when we have the technology. And that’s where the clue was. The world needs saving. I love technology and believe it can save us. I am good at talking. And I can be paid to teach. My Ikigai - or life’s purpose - is to train people how to use technology so that they can be better educated, more confident and can be part of saving the world. And all that only took me a couple of hours to work out back in 2022 when the pandemic had ended and I was trying to work out what to do with my life. I recommend that you do it. Try it on your own first before paying people like me to do it with you. It’s worth the brain strain. Trust me on that.
