World Science Day for Peace and Development reminds us of the power of science to build bridges, not walls. From climate change solutions to public health advances, science is crucial in resolving global challenges, and promoting human cooperation towards peace. Liberalism, which champions intellectual freedom and cooperation, encourages innovations that support both peace and sustainable development. In today’s world, where knowledge is more accessible than ever, it’s essential to advocate for policies that promote scientific literacy and research as tools for progress. As history has shown us, peace and development depend on our ability to harness the potential of science. This insightful blog article highlights how progress has been fast-tracked thanks to developments in science and technology, which is highlighted in the graphic. #FNF #WorldScienceDay #ScienceForPeace

Find out more about the Inter-Parliamentary Union Science for Peace School In a world increasingly divided by nationalistic and polarised views, the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) Science for Peace School stands as a beacon of hope. Watch our video: https://lnkd.in/epDBN2MA The IPU’s Science for Peace School initiative harnesses scientific solutions to tackle global challenges. The initial focus was on water scarcity issues in regions like the Middle East, Africa’s Sahel, and the Mekong River Basin. The school uses scientific discourse to address environmental and technological challenges and as a diplomatic tool to strengthen ties between historically divided nations. Science, as a universal language, unifies us all to tackle global issues through evidence-based policymaking and collaboration. The innovative use of science transcends cultural and national boundaries, facilitating objective, fact-based collaboration. The integration of scientific approaches into environmental policies demonstrates how shared resources like air and water can unite diverse groups. Our goal is to envision a future where shared challenges are met with innovative, collaborative solutions, leading to enduring peace and unity. This dialogue aims to inspire a synergy of science and politics, fostering cooperation, equitable solutions, and a culture of problem-solving. Let’s continue to bridge gaps between nations and resolve practical problems through scientific methods. #IPUScienceforPeaceSchool #ScienceforPeace #WaterScarcity

Certainly, science and scientists need an “open and safe ecosystem that encourages the free flow of ideas.” It’s easy to think about state interference and intervention, gender and racial discrimination, populism, and the erosion of democracy negatively affecting the freedom and safety of scientists. But there are less obvious dangers to freedom and safety. Since scientists often operate within the framework of academic institutions, research organizations, or government, their agency and autonomy are bounded. Because freedom is strategically connected to agency and autonomy, other factors than those mentioned above need to be checked. I’m specifically referring to the pernicious influence that market thinking and economicism have on science (i.e., on scientists and scientific practices): the devaluation and rejection of everything that does not have immediate market value or is closely connected to metrics like GDP. This negative influence can be found, for instance, in prioritizing studies that have immediate commercial applications over those with long-term societal benefits, or by skewing research agendas to deter exploration into areas that are less economically profitable but scientifically significant, or by introducing quality metrics that might be relevant for companies but needn’t be for science, etc. There’s a paradox. Due to perverse market incentives that steer scientists to secure funding and pursue marketable projects, scientists can achieve greater safety by diminishing their very own autonomy regarding choosing their research topics and having a say in shaping research agendas. This too needs to be addressed together with other more obvious threats.
Preserving scientific research today safeguards the resilience and well-being of our societies tomorrow. Together, let's protect what truly matters. Science for Peace: A Global Commitment. It’s International Week of Science and Peace, a time to recognize the vital role of science in promoting peace, security, and sustainable development. Science has the power to transcend borders, unite cultures, and address global challenges. Did you know that many renowned scientists have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of peace and understanding? Figures like Albert Einstein and Marie Curie used their knowledge and influence to advocate for peace and social justice. As L&D professionals, we can contribute to a more peaceful and sustainable future by promoting scientific literacy and critical thinking. By equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills to solve complex problems, we can empower them to make informed decisions and contribute to a better world. Let's celebrate the International Week of Science and Peace by embracing the power of science to address global challenges and promote peace and understanding. Together, we can build a more just, equitable, and sustainable future. #InternationalWeekOfScienceAndPeace #ScienceForPeace #Sustainability #Innovation #LnD #ChetanTupe #CRTbyCRT

On this day, we celebrate the World Science Day for Peace and Development, a reminder of the vital role science plays in fostering peace, improving lives, and driving sustainable development. Established by the United Nations in 2001, this day highlights the need for global collaboration in science to address challenges such as climate change, health crises, and social inequality. At CWMUN, we encourage young leaders to explore how science and diplomacy can work hand in hand to build a more peaceful, equitable world. By investing in scientific research and fostering dialogue between nations, we can solve global challenges and ensure that the benefits of scientific progress are shared by all. 💬 How do you think science can contribute to peace and development in today's world? #WorldScienceDay #CWMUN #ScienceForPeace #GlobalLeadership #SustainableDevelopment #YouthInDiplomacy #UNObservances

In troubling times, what role is there for science to play? This weekend, we mark the World Science Day for Peace and Development, on 10 November. It's a time to reflect on the positive - and often understated - influence research can have on society. To mark the occasion last year, we compiled a list of projects advancing science's positive legacy: from improving conflict resolution to delivering on the #SustainableDevelopmentGoals. Give these projects and read - and let us reflect on how research, its results and findings, can contribute to creating the conditions for peace and in turn, allow for societies to flourish. #WorldScienceDay #PeaceDay

🌍🔬 Celebrating World Science Day for Peace and Development 🔬🌍 This weekend, we recognise the vital role that science plays in promoting peace, advancing sustainable development, and improving lives worldwide. World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights how research and innovation can bridge divides, tackle global challenges, and contribute to a fairer, more resilient world. To truly harness science’s potential, it must be accessible to all—starting from a young age. Inspiring curiosity and critical thinking in younger generations is essential for cultivating future scientists, innovators, and informed citizens. Effective outreach and education initiatives ensure that the wonders of science reach everyone, empowering individuals and communities to engage with and benefit from scientific progress. Let’s work toward a future where science serves as a force for peace, cooperation, and inclusive growth, and where everyone has the opportunity to participate in and contribute to scientific advancement. #WorldScienceDay #ScienceForAll #PeaceAndDevelopment #OutreachMatters #InspireYoungMinds #InclusiveInnovation
