As more people become aware of how the xz backdoor was discovered - a diligent developer at Microsoft found a small timing discrepancy between backdoored and non-backdoored sshd daemons - two things come to mind: * One, how this reminds me of Clifford Stoll’s saga in the Cuckoo’s Egg. In that case, a 25c accounting discrepancy led to one of the most interesting of the early “state-level actor” campaigns. * Two, how important it is for all those who use open-source software to support maintainers and oversight over key projects.
