As the #ICIS2024 deadline approaches, I thought sharing an IS Classic on Information Systems as a reference discipline + the MISQ Insider interview with Richard Baskerville and Michael Myers felt about right. The article: https://lnkd.in/eE27nA43 The insider interview: https://lnkd.in/epE6wrhT The citation: Baskerville, R. L., & Myers, M. D. (2002). Information systems as a reference discipline. MIS Quarterly, 1-14. The abstract: The conventional wisdom amongst information systems (IS) researchers is that information systems is an applied discipline drawing upon other, more fundamental, reference disciplines. These reference disciplines are seen as having foundational value for IS. We believe that it is time to question the conventional wisdom. We agree that many disciplines are relevant for IS researchers, but we suggest a re-think of the idea of “reference disciplines” for IS. In a sense, IS has come of age. Perhaps the time has come for IS to become a reference discipline for others. #misq #bangkok2024 #ais

🎉GSIM version 2.0 is released! 🔄GSBPM has been widely used by many statistical offices to standardize their production processes across different thematic domains. Then, how do we harmonize the information that flow inside these processes? And this is where GSIM (Generic Statistical Information Model) can help! Statistical organizations deal with huge amount of information - not only about the data they collect and acquire to produce statistics (e.g., concept, unit), but various aspects of its operations (e.g., business step, statistical programme cycle). 📚GSIM provides a set of standardized information classes that are used in the design and production of statistics. It can improve the communication between business and IT experts as well as between different subject-matter-domains, creating an environment for re-use and sharing of methods, components and processes. 🤝 GSIM was first developed by the community and for the community in 2012. The model has been gone through several revisions to incorporate new developments and user experiences. The latest revision, co-led by Flavio Rizzolo and Francine Kalonji (Statistics Canada | Statistique Canada Canada) with special thanks for Jenny Linnerud (Statistics Norway), resulted in GSIM 2.0 (https://lnkd.in/eAtWdsw4). If you have any questions or comments for improvement, please leave them on the GSIM v2.0 GitHub page! 💻Want to learn more about GSIM? Here is the backstage of #HAC2024, just before I had the opportunity to discuss about how to infuse #BehavioralScience in organisations with Pauline Le Golvan, Allison Zelkowitz and Scott Young. A few thoughts that has been shared … 1️⃣ Infusing behavioural science : - Is about building a human centric organisation. It is not only about doing great technical products and service but also about making these products and services human centric designed. - Is also about infusing a test and learn culture and running experiments. 2️⃣ Some challenges we face to infuse behavioural science: - While training people, help them to transform the knowledge into actions - Embed behavioural science in existing projects (rather than creating new projects) - Push for measurements and experiments 3️⃣ Some advice for infusing behavioural science - Find a sponsor who will open the doors and who is open to test (succes and failures) - Be prepared to have experiments which do not conclude in the way you expected and to reframe - Start with small pilots. Thank you BVA Nudge Consulting The BVA Family for this opportunity to share.

While everyone is busy packing their bags and planning their itineraries for SIGIR 2024, I'd like to share our publication in the ACM Transactions on Information Systems, selected for presentation at SIGIR 2024 and titled "Risk-Sensitive Selection of Search Configurations" Josiane Mothe & Md Zia Ullah. Full paper here: [ACM Digital Library](https://lnkd.in/etbrG56y). 🔍 Core Idea: In information retrieval systems, search parameters are usually optimized based on past searches, but this one-size-fits-all approach isn't always effective. Our paper proposes a risk-sensitive method that dynamically selects the best search configuration for each individual query, rather than relying on a static set of parameters. This adaptive approach leads to significant improvements in search effectiveness. 🌟 Key Highlights: - Selective Query Processing: Automatically adjusts search configurations to fit the specific needs of each query. - Risk and Reward Functions: Introduces ERisk and NRisk functions to balance the trade-off between effectiveness and risk. - Significant Improvements: Achieves up to 20% better performance compared to traditional methods, based on metrics like P@10 and nDCG@10. 🌱 We've already used up our fair share of carbon emissions this year and will not be adding more by attending SIGIR 2024 in person. #InformationRetrieval #SIGIR2024 #ACMTOIS Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or want to discuss the research further! 😊 Josiane Mothe Senior Professor of Computer Science, Specialist in Information Retrieval

🌊 Reflecting on an insightful visit to the WWEM show at the Birmingham NEC. It’s clear that the UK water industry is making strong progress toward embracing digital transformation, and the conversations around data and AI were front and centre. 💧 The challenges the sector faces—whether around operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, or sustainability—are complex, but it's equally clear that data and AI hold the key to unlocking powerful solutions. At BJSS, we’ve been bringing our expertise in data engineering, AI, and cloud solutions to the utilities sector, helping organisations break down data silos, deploy solutions, and gain real-time operational insights. For AMP 8, it’s becoming increasingly evident that now is the time to act at scale. Good progress is being made, but the next phase will be critical to fully capitalise on these digital innovations. If you didn’t get a chance to meet at the event, I’d be happy to connect and explore how BJSS can help your organisation harness the full potential of data and AI in tackling the sector's challenges. #WWEM2024 #DigitalTransformation #DataAI #Utilities #WaterIndustry #BJSS #Innovation #AMP8

So, attending a research network event would not normally be a week’s high point especially when most of the normal day job is about creating an environment for growing delivery on the ground, however it was actually quite (pleasantly) good. Masterminded by Rafaelle Nicholson et al, a smorgasbord of papers and presentations featured the world of cricket in a post ICEC world. Opening the batting was an unfamiliar position for me and was soon dutifully dismissed to make way for a range of big hitters all looking at how cricket needs to respond to the serious agenda of making the game inclusive. Of the many subjects covered were the perceived, at times invisibility of women’s cricket , kit, when ‘humour’ isn’t funny, the erasing of some historic cricket played in times when your skin colour precluded recognition, and of course the impact of the Hundred which always creates much debate. The latter I think is a sleeping giant that will accelerate positively the probing and promptings of the ICEC report. Thanks to many including Hannah Thompson-Radford and Thomas Fletcher (thanks Annie Chave for borrowing your image!) and of course the composed as ever Kate Aldridge: russell holden Andrew Hignell Dr Michael Collins Dominic Malcolm #CRN2024 A week involving board and sub-committees’ meetings gave me a highlight of an energised demonstrating what’s being done innovatively to shape the pathway further in response to ICEC. A film explaining all including the enigmatic Aimee Rees is soon for release. Watch this space. Article not enhanced by AI. 😃

UET+TMT= RP in WMSCI 2024 🌍 Today, I had the privilege of presenting my research article, Strategic Decisions in Firms Driven by Collective Work Experience from the Upper Echelons Theory Perspective, at the 28th World Multi-Conference on Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics (WMSCI 2024). I'm continuing my journey towards a mathematical model for calculating the proportions of diversity needed in top management teams to achieve the “silver bullet” and succeed in business. 🔑 Two key findings: 1. Integrating Human Resource managers into top management decision processes leads to better outcomes by focusing on people management and diversity. 2. Diverse perspectives lead to more thought-out strategies during crisis. 🧡Discovery by surprise while presenting — I loved smart questions, those made me think, and if something made me think, it means I was progressing. 🌟 my gratitude to Elina Gaile-Sarkane for her support and guidance, allowing me to pursue my dreams [sometimes hard to explain my vision] of positively impacting the world. #WMSCI2024 #UpperEchelonsTheory #StrategicDecisions #CollectiveWorkExperience #DiversityInLeadership #RTU #Womeninscience
