THE SET UP: We are not the same. What you see I might not, what you mean to communicate might not land, what you feel is likely different for me. The acceptance of our internal diversity is another part of coaching and personal development work. We must recognise our sensory perceptions are / can be widely diverse to situations, ideas and process. INTERNAL v EXTERNAL DIVERSITY Understanding this variance in perception is crucial, especially in communication and collaboration. Our brains, while brilliant, are prone to these perceptual biases and noise, but we can work to approach situations with greater openness and clarity. This recognition helps us improve how we connect with and understand others, fostering more effective and harmonious interactions. THE MATHS: 1.5kg of Tofu encased in darkness and liquid, the bodies most energy intensive organ, the average brain contains around 86 billion neurons, each with thousands of connections, making for an intricate and highly personalized synaptic network in the trillions. Considering this astonishing complexity, it's no wonder that our perceptions and interpretations can vary so widely. WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THIS: Well start thinking how this is of relevance to you, your teams, your new job or your proposed goals for 2024. Neural Plasticity: Imagine a path, that in time becomes a small road that in time through use becomes a motorway. Believe it or not this is how your brain works and looks, what you might consider to be an adaptive and dynamic mindset might be a lot more rigid than you’d like to imagine, a sort of SATNAV for the brain that ignores bad traffic. The ability to rewire your learning is harder than you think, as I have said before, we are not predisposed to change, our base level operating system is just that, one relied upon as it has served us and kept us safe in the past. DEEPER DIVERSITY FRAMEWORKS: So what we might see on the outside is far from the full story. The 1.5kg of Tofu designed in part by genetics and part nurture/environment like childhood experiences to cultural influences, the environment we grow up in and interact with continually shapes our neural development and perceptual frameworks. Perhaps a little fun with the Red Coke Can, Coca Cola likely win by having imbedded a red coke can in the majority of our brains. Develop your smarts… Live with discomfort! According to the mental toughness framework, becoming “comfortable with being uncomfortable” is a proven way of developing your smarts, building your agility and extending your comfort zone to a new, previously unchartered level. Developing a habit that is initially unfamiliar and uncomfortable will help you learn faster, retain more information and elevate your confidence to a higher level. In this article, Australia Inc editor, Jeff Haden recommends the continuous development of what he calls your “fluid intelligence”, because once you master a new process, a new routine, a new skill, a new anything, you need to focus on learning something else, on a new skill you don’t yet possess. The key is to stay uncomfortable and keep challenging yourself. Because, then you get to double-dip. You gain new knowledge, new skill, and new experience, and you keep your brain “bulked up” since it’s forced to continue forging new neural connections. That double-dip also makes it easier to keep getting smarter at a biological and neurological level. The more you know, the more you can leverage the power of associative learning: the process of relating something new to something you already know. This means you only have to learn differences or nuances and will be able to apply additional context — context that also helps with memory storage and retrieval — to the new information you learn. Jeff recommends that you should work on pushing yourself to learn new things about your business, your customers, your industry, etc. In a broader sense, keep pushing yourself to learn new things about whatever interests you. Not only will that help you become more successful, but you’ll also get to increase your crystallized intelligence and improve your fluid intelligence. Which will likely make you even more successful. All this automatically builds your mental toughness – As you learn to take new situations and challenges in your stride, you’ll subsequently feel less under pressure when facing something new. I have seen a particular trend with all the industries i have worked with and affect not only the business aspect of each organization but also the learning curve of the staffs. The trend of Cognitive Entrenchment ! Cognituve Entrenchment refers to the phenomenon where individuals become deeply invested in their existing knowledge, beliefs, or perspectives, making it challenging to consider alternative viewpoints or new information. This entrenchment can lead to: 1. Confirmation bias: Seeking only confirming evidence. 2. Resistance to change: Dismissing or downplaying contradictory information. 3. Narrow focus: Overemphasizing familiar concepts, neglecting broader contexts. Factors contributing to cognitive entrenchment: 1. Experience and expertise 2. Emotional investment 3. Social identity 4. Familiarity and habit Consequences: 1. Missed opportunities for growth and learning 2. Poor decision-making 3. Strained relationships due to intolerance for differing views Overcoming cognitive entrenchment requires: 1. Open-mindedness 2. Active listening 3. Seeking diverse perspectives 4. Embracing ambiguity and uncertainty 5. Willingness to revise or update beliefs Strategies to mitigate cognitive entrenchment: 1. Engage in constructive debates 2. Seek feedback and criticism 3. Out of the millions of pieces of information from our surroundings, we pick out those that directly concern us. For example, we recognize an old friend on a bike or notice that someone is wearing the same jacket as us. Similarly, our thoughts about ourselves work in the same way. If we tell ourselves that "we are good for nothing," we will feel more anxious when facing challenges. Our internal dialogue shapes our emotions and confidence in our actions. I thought I was a good leader at home and at work, but then... I started doing a Developmental self-reflection process... That surfaced HIDDEN assumptions driving my thinking (and doing). As I developed deeper discernment I gained valuable insight, such as... 🤯 Many stories in my head were FAKE NEWS! 🤕 And assuming OTHERS couldn't handle the 'truth.' So I frequently withheld sharing my 'truth.' ☠️ Wait... it gets worse! ☠️ I then rationalized withholding my truth... 🚫 for fear of hurting the other or... 🚫 assuming they couldn't handle it. Today, I work on myself and with others to ensure we do NOT rationalize phoniness into nobility. We use a Developmental process based on rigorous self-reflection, Socratic dialogue and... Systemic thinking frameworks to ensure we're not settling for generic RESULTS, RELATIONSHIPS, and EFFECTS in the world. It's a structured process that includes and exceeds the Human Development Movement. When we only aim for nicey-nice HUMAN Development, we deprioritize SYSTEMIC evolution. My bold truth now? One of the curriculums that my partner Hilary Bilbrey and I integrate in our trainings and coaching programs for PEQ Performance Consulting LLC is Positive Intelligence - a mindset fitness plan that helps people build new neural pathways to respond more positively to stress. One of the power tools I use is called #VisualizetheChild, a practice that activates empathy and can become an automated stress response, rather than defensiveness, for example. Some clients can easily imagine their young selves and discern what they are doing, feeling, and saying. They remember natural ways of embracing the cards given to them, whether in hardship or glory or both. Others are surprised by how disconnected they are to their younger selves. They just cannot remember this young person. How about you? Let's give it a try! 1. Imagine sitting on a park bench with your young self. 2. What is this young person imagining or managing? 3. How does this young person feel? 4. What does this young person need, want or wish? 5. What does this young person want to say to you? 6. What would you like to say to this young person? When I did this exercise, my relationship with my younger self strengthen. I was surprised about what I had forgotten - my incredible desire to love, help and nurture. I remember the patterns of behavior that supported my nature. She had things to tell me, anchoring me back to my roots. And what I did tell her? "Keeping loving, keep going. I am cheering you on! You will eventually impact the world because you love so hard." But I am a strong believer in being self-aware and recognising when self-doubt kicks in. I see it as a signal. Here is an opportunity to learn and grow! And that extends my knowledge and confidence. The more situations I put myself in where I know I am stretching myself, the more I realise that I am preventing stagnation and moving towards self-belief, to move beyond my comfort zone. And yes, some of that can be a challenge, yet it can be overcome. Some recent training work has uncovered some areas of stretch for me, which has resulted in me digging deep in to my levels of confidence. I can proudly say that as a result I am enjoying my facilitation and training role more than ever. It didn't always feel like that of course. Many years ago I would have avoided situations that may have shown my areas of weakness or doubt. No wonder I was stuck in a career that I didn't enjoy for so long! Yet when I explored areas of self-development, coaching and in particular NLP, then things started to change. My "what if I screw it up?" narrative shifted to a "what if I succeed and what can I learn?" mindset. Over the past decade, this mindset led me towards a career change, setting up my own business, many of hours of coaching, becoming certified as a Trainer of NLP and Motivational Maps. Training other coaches and consultants and helping them to develop their own coaching businesses. Facilitation and training many great people in leadership and confidence. As well helping some awesome people with their presentation and public speaking skills. And with my most recent collaboration we will be creating our own unique online coaching program. So maybe it's time you had a shift, turn the so called 'imposter syndrome' in to the positive signal it can be and stretch yourself in to making positive change in your career/business/life. How often do you stop to consider the "way" you think? Us humans apparently have around 60,000 thoughts every single day (source link in the comments). This means that, on 60,000 occasions during the day, you and I are seemingly engaged in reasoning, reflecting, pondering, cogitating, ruminating, etc. etc. (BTW, I’ve no idea how this was worked out – but it’s a lot!). However, how often do you stop to ‘think’ about all this ‘thinking’ you’re constantly doing? Which brings me to …. Metacognition. But what’s that, I hear you ask? (if you don’t know, don’t feel bad because I had no clue myself about this until I began my coaching training). “Metacognition is, put simply, thinking about one's thinking ….“ Vanderbilt University Center for Teaching. Or …. “Awareness or analysis of one's own learning or thinking processes” .... Merriam-Webster dictionary. So, now that we know what metacognition is, how does that help mere mortals like you and I? How about asking yourself these questions to find out? Is my thinking, i.e. the ‘way’ I habitually think, getting me to where I want to be in life? Is it getting me the results you I want? Is it making me happy, contented, satisfied with my lot in life (or whatever)? And, if your answers show that none of this is happening, what are you going to do about it? The logical answer would seem to be that you need to change your thinking in order to achieve the ‘things’ you want in life but which aren’t happening for you at present. But how do you do that? There are, in fact, a number of ways in which you can ‘change the way you think’ and they’re not all that difficult to master (although they do require a bit of effort).
