Before Spring Break, the City of Miami Beach released a PSA to visitors in the form of a "Break Up" video. The PSA highlighted several measures the city is taking to ensure #publicsafety and crowd control through enforced curfews, DUI checkpoints, restricted beach access, higher parking fees, and harsher drug possession charges. This enforcement comes on the heels of known reports throughout the years of violent acts, drunk driving accidents, public indecency, and more which have long stained the city's reputation as Spring Breaker's wildest and most uninhibited vacation spot. #Tourism is a huge revenue component for the city and while it is unorthodox in the marketing and #tourismindustry to tell vacations to not visit a location, Miami has good reason to. Nonetheless, clubs and bars in South Beach 🌴 say they are suffering massive revenue losses due to the curfew enforcement during their busiest time of the season. So, I want to pose the questions to you all, "Should Spring Break hot spots like Miami Beach give in to business owner's concerns, or prioritize the safety of their community?" As a Miami native, I understand the concerns and challenges posed by both sides and wonder what can be done to appease business owners while enhancing safety for the community and out of town'ers. Panama City Beach had similar issues and implemented legal changes over the past decade which enhanced their tourism and safety laws. Perhaps the City of Miami Beach can learn a thing from PCB.
