My product engineer called me "intense" today. Here is why it was an incredible compliment. He said "𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗼𝗲𝘀" and shared an article called "A few thoughts on intensity" (link in first comment). As I demo our platform - to investors or customers - no one can believe we have built so much with such a small team. And we do it all while working fully remotely. With generous leave and care policies. The only way to do this is through intensity. To make remote work 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬, you have to push hard, be intense, in the right places. 1. 𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 - we are agile and experimental, but there is no excuse for each iteration to not be as good as is reasonable under the circumstances. Don't waste an iteration.     2. 𝟮𝗗 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿-𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - it is easy to get people excited or focused in 3D real-life. To get people to pay attention via Zoom in 2D, you have be more animated, dynamic... almost a caricature of yourself.     3. 𝗘𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘃𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 - loyalty and human bonds are easier to form in person. To achieve tight connections in remote teams, you have to expose a bit of your heart sometimes, to create a safe space for others to do the same. That can feel intense, but it is essential for creating a high-performance remote work culture.     4. 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻 - every startup is a miracle. The odds we have to overcome to just survive, let alone flourish, are mind-boggling. There is too much work to do, with insufficient resources and time to do it. It takes immense intense effort to get there. I am not at a point where I need to hire a virtual assistant. But, I do use AI to do research and help with my writing. I still check AI results. Writing online changed my life for good. I have a 2k+ people waitlist for JobsCopilot.ai. Most from Twitter/Linkedin. But I haven't been able to develop JobsCopilot, because I'm swamped with Fractional CTO clients. Also from Twitter/Linkedin. I'm finally launching. And I love the work I've done at JobsCopilot so far: - It tracks 400k+ companies - Monitors changes in their careers pages - Serves hundreds of curated job matches to every user This is the stuff I wish I had every time I looked for a job in the past. It automates the grunt work! Below is a screenshot from some data checks I ran last week. I'm tracking ~89k tech companies as a sub-set of my DB. From those, ~26k tech companies are actively hiring, with a total of ~109k open jobs, after all data checks and filters. The job market is alive after all! This is very exciting. And I'm happy to announce it will be launching on 28th of May, to those on the waitlist. You can still join this early launch at JobsCopilot.ai. However, I had planned to launch it in February... and here we are, launching in late May. It was for a good reason, though. The demand for my Fractional CTO services has exploded in recent months. I wasn't able to focus on JobsCopilot for most of March and April. Anyway, lots of learnings as great things happen in parallel. Trying to build a unicorn without a mission-driven cuture is setting yourself up for failure. So we got a hacker house. We've rented a house in SF and some of our team have now moved in together. We got a huge billboard of Ava (our AI BDR) outside our window, so she can work with us too! We've been flying out our remote employees for in-person sprints. 5 of our team have already come to work with us in person, and it's led to some of the most productive weeks we've had. In the span of a few weeks, we've: - Built our strategy for the remainder of 2024 - Started laying the groundwork for our next Artisan 👀 - Mapped out our V4 sales product roadmap - Done an in-person engineering sprint - Gotten closer as a team Building culture among a remote team can be difficult, and it’s something I’m learning more about and getting better at every day. A few of our early learning with remote/hybrid culture have led to us doing the following: - A weekly All Hands that reiterates our mission, aligns the team and celebrates wins - Developing 6 core company principles which we encourage everyone to live by, centered around how we interact with others, operate, and treat our customers - Clearly defining our mission. Everyone on the team knows we’re building a $100bn company and redefining the broken software landscape - Only having the best people. Our team are extraordinary talented, work hard and seek perfection. We hold that bar with new additions - Making Slack fun! Our Slack is full of custom emojis and key stats are sent to different channels daily. We try to keep the “office door knock” vibe by heavily using huddles And as we rapidly grow Artisan, we're looking for insanely talented people to help us build the next paradigm of software - with consolidation and automation at the core of our mission. I’ve wrapped up my stint at OpenAI. It was a whirlwind adventure! I’m thrilled that I had the opportunity, and still glad I left my previous position to try something new. I’m taking a personal break, and I haven’t decided yet when to go back to work - maybe a few more weeks, maybe protracted. If you have an interesting opportunity, I’m excited to talk to you, but not looking to rush into a new chapter. What stands out the most about OpenAI is how relentlessly mission-focused everyone is. They fully intend to do the implausible, and I wouldn’t bet against them. It was an honor to work with so many experts, and refreshing to have such talent in a still (relatively speaking) small company where everyone is accessible. My favorite new industry experience was the web of single-purpose service providers that would be internal teams at a FAANG monolith. Plenty of them were sensible and useful, but the extreme is pretty humorous. For instance, on my last day I got an email from helloretriever.com: a logistics company that specializes in remote employee laptop returns! This was also my first professional encounter with Slack, and I’m starting to appreciate the connected web ecosystem in a new way. The most useful thing I learned about myself was how much I feed off the energy of a local, highly connected team. I knew ahead of time that remote work would be a personal challenge. I joined Google Pittsburgh many years ago because I wanted a change after working remotely for a decade. Going back to remote collaboration sapped a lot of the richness of the work experience, and despite the passionate mission focus we all shared it was sometimes hard to keep myself going. When I do return to work, I’ll be looking for a local Pittsburgh office or a distributed team with a track record of effective remote collaboration. My ideal role is as an engineering problem solver, whether the challenges are technical or organizational.
