In our ongoing series on the European Championship 2024 we look at similarities and differences of the countries playing. ⚽ Denmark and England share a strong maritime tradition and a deep-rooted royal heritage. Culturally, England is distinguished by its dark humor and love of theater, while Denmark is well known for its minimalist design style and Viking history. Denmark 🇩🇰: Hygge magic: Denmark is known for its concept of 'hygge', which means cosy relaxation and socializing. They take their hygge very seriously - candles, warm blankets and good food are the basics for a perfect hygge experience. 💝 Little mermaid: Copenhagen is home to the renowned Little Mermaid statue, perched on a harbor rock, symbolizing Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale legacy, the city's maritime heritage, and eternal themes of love and sacrifice. It remains one of the most photographed landmarks in Denmark's capital. 🧜🏽♀️ Danish design: Denmark's design legacy shines through iconic furniture by Jacobsen and Wegner, while LEGO's inventive bricks continue to inspire creativity globally. 🤩 England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿: Teatime tradition: In England, "teatime" is more than just having a cup of tea. It is an institution! English people take their tea breaks very seriously. Rituals abound and tea is traditionally served with scones, clotted cream and jam. ☕ Weather chatter: In England, small talk often revolves around the ever-changing weather, which is a national obsession due to its unpredictability. Whether discussing sunny spells, showers, or snow, chatting about the weather is a social icebreaker and a shared cultural pastime. ☀⛈ Linguistic curiosities: There are numerous place names in England that are notoriously difficult to pronounce if you're unfamiliar with them. Two weeks ago, something extraordinary happened on my street here in Eindhoven. For the second year in a row, our neighbourhood came together to host a street barbecue, and this time, I could finally join. About 30 of us sat around long tables, sharing food, stories, and laughter—a heartwarming experience. But the part that struck me the most was that, as we counted, we realized that half of the attendees were originally from outside the Netherlands. It turns out that I am not only an Expat Coach but have also been living on an Expat Street—and I had no idea! The food? Amazing. After six years of living here, I discovered my neighbour across the street is a professional chef! He prepared the barbecue and some fantastic dishes beforehand and even provided the music. Among us, we also have a designer, engineers, business administrators, and a pilot (to mention some) — quite a diverse and talented group. And the cherry 🍒 on top? The City of Eindhoven sponsored the event! What a brilliant initiative to foster connections between neighbours and build a sense of belonging. #BerlinistKultur 🤝 The action alliance #BerlinIstKultur is calling for a demonstration in front of the Brandenburger Tor, Platz des 18. März on 13 November 2024 from 10 am to 1 pm to demonstrate against the planned cuts in the cultural sector. ❌ Berlin is facing massive budget cuts. This affects all departments, but could hit the cultural sector in the worst case scenario: A cut of 10% is being considered, and this despite the fact that the cultural budget only accounts for 2.1% of the total budget. ❌ Loss of revenue, loss of 8.2% of Berlin's jobs, collateral damage, e.g. in the hotel and catering industry or retail trade due to the loss of cultural tourism - these are just some of the consequences that could occur immediately and in a very short space of time. ❌ Art and culture is fundamentally more than just any old leisure activity or entertainment for a supposedly privileged upper class - in Berlin in particular, it is a fundamental part of the capital's DNA as one of the most interesting and creative cities in Europe due to its diversity, quality and potential for innovation. This attracts visitors and tourists from all over the world, making the city a place worth living for its old and new inhabitants, for artists of all genres and for urgently needed skilled labour. HABIC is the cluster association representing the habitat, wood, hospitality, and design industries in the Basque Country. ❓ What advantages have you gained by connecting with partners from different geographical regions? Mari highlighted the significant advantages of connecting with partners from diverse regions, including the opportunity to exchange contacts and meet new people within the furniture sector. These connections have provided valuable insights and have been instrumental in learning how to initiate activities or consolidate relationships in other markets. ❓ How has this project impacted your cluster's ability to enter and succeed in new markets? She explained that the project has greatly enhanced the cluster’s ability to connect with and attract companies and profiles that they might not have reached otherwise. ❓ What are the main advantages of a project like this between clusters for supporting exports to third countries? Mari emphasized that collaboration between clusters has generated new connections and brought different perspectives to the table. These fresh viewpoints have been valuable in supporting exports to third countries, offering a more comprehensive approach to international collaboration. ❓ Do you believe that a collaborative model of international representation, such as shared showrooms or offices, has the potential to work with more than one country in a space? She believes that this collaborative model would be particularly beneficial for the European community, as it would foster deeper connections and facilitate more cohesive international representation.
