Monday is the sixth California Transit Transformation Task Force (TTTF) meeting in Monterey, California, where we'll be considering recommendations to promote fare and service integration of transit across the state. Establishing the funding and governance that supports integration are among the most impactful things this task force must do - critical to building transit ridership across the state and creating a more equitable, high ridership, and seamless transit network. The following are the draft recommendations for discussion. I'm really happy to see that "creating a governance structure to support integration" is identified - including identifying roles and responsibilities between States, MPOs, and transit agencies. This was one of the key lessons coming out of the Bay Area Swiss transit delegation to Switzerland. Tuitavuki, COO at Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST), the California Transit Association’s new Operations Committee Chair, gives his perspective on the major challenges transit agencies face today. As they balance the demand for widespread coverage with limited resources, finding the bandwidth to assess and deploy new technology isn’t easy! I can confirm that everything is bigger in Texas. For example, did you know that Dallas Fort Worth International Airport covers an area larger than Manhattan? (17,207 acres / 26.89 square miles / 69.63 square kilometers, to be precise.) Many of the highways have six wide lanes, and there are turnpikes galore! Understanding the mammoth scale of a lot of the US infrastructure helps us understand why a lot of it has not been upgraded since the 1970s, more than fifty years ago. What is clear though is that the time seems to be now; many upgrades are in progress across the country, with some already completed. (Newark and LaGuardia airports are very visible examples of this.) Regardless of the election results, it looks like this path will still continue, with a big focus on more efficient infrastructure. There is no doubt that there are opportunities there. Speaking of upgraded infrastructure, it was wonderful to visit the relatively new Dallas office amidst many engaging meetings with advisors and institutions. Lingqian Hu and I just published a viewpoint in the Journal of the American Planning Association with lessons learned from the success of FlexRide Milwaukee. Instead of automatically choosing to invest in shuttles to extend from the end of fixed transit routes: 1) Listen to existing and potential riders; 2) Consider flexible transit options (e.g., on-demand microtransit) and multimodal networks (e.g., bicycling) that can serve door-to-door trips; 3) create more efficient systems in the long run through transit-supportive development decisions (encourage businesses close to transit routes; incentivize affordable housing close to employment & activity centers). 50 free downloads from https://lnkd.in/gFGw74-A
