I recently came across a reel featuring Adam Grant that made a compelling point about leadership dynamics in meetings. He noted that those who frequently speak up are often chosen for leadership positions. However, these individuals are not always the best leaders. In fact, they may be worse because they often fail to listen and learn from the voices around them. Their obsession with being the smartest person in the room prevents them from making the room smarter. This insight is a powerful reminder that true leadership isn't about dominating the conversation; it's about fostering an environment where everyone feels heard and valued. Effective leaders prioritize listening over speaking and are committed to continuous learning from their team. As we develop and promote leaders within our organizations, let's look beyond who speaks the loudest and focus on those who have the humility and wisdom to listen and uplift others. After all, the smartest room is one where every voice contributes to the collective intelligence.
