A brilliant day welcoming the 4th cohort of Santander UK's Black Talent programme - designed to support our Black colleagues and give them the tools and connections they need to blossom in the workplace. It's always a privilege to attend these sessions as I get to support colleagues like Temi grow their careers. With 11.6% of our 2023 cohort already receiving a promotion, I'm looking forward to helping more colleagues reach their full potential.

Measuring our impact has always been a sticky challenge—one that defies easy quantification. How do you measure something as intangible as the experience of not quite belonging, but not quite knowing why? I joined the 10,000 Interns Foundation in 2021 with a mandate to answer this question. My task was to author our first ever impact report, assessing whether we were meeting our mission as an organisation. It took me four years to get there. Why? Because the last four years have been dedicated to building an organisation that could support over 50,000 applicants, 1,000 participating organisations, and an alumni community of over 7,000, alongside an unstoppable team. But more importantly, because the only people that can truly speak to our impact are those affected by our work, and that wasn’t my story to tell in 2021. We’re now finally at a place where we can understand our impact beyond the numbers. Where we can offer a space for people to tell their own story. The result? Pages upon pages of rich insight, personal stories of empowerment, courage, fear, and ultimately, change. So, if you want to know whether we’ve met our original mission of offering improved access to entry for Black talent, you can finally read our first ever impact report. If you want to know what the workplace looks like for Black talent, and what we’re going to do about it over the next 10 years, you can find that in there too... A big thank you to those that trusted me with the the task of pulling together our story, and those of the candidates, interns, and organisations that have engaged with our work. To those that have made this all possible Rebecca Achieng Ajulu-Bushell, David Hutchison, Q5 and Daniel Levy, ClearView Research, Dr. Kenny Imafidon MBE, Dr. Elsa Zekeng, Michael Barrington-Hibbert Wol Kolade Dawid Konotey-Ahulu, Jonathan Sorrell, Faye Woodhead, Stuart Breyer, and the whole 10K team! The Black Business Market 2024 will be one I will remember and here’s why🙌🏾✨… ☑️ Growing up as a minority in Belfast, it was rare to see people like me or people who had big dreams/ambitions as me but hearing from Akeila Browne, MA talk about being a entrepreneurial business woman was inspirational. It truly opened my eyes in how unique/creative I was in this competitive media world. You wouldn’t believe it but I used to get into trouble in school for “talking too much” or “laughing loud/a lot”. I love having conversations and I find things funny…what’s wrong with that? I know for a fact that these are great qualities of mine and I have achieved me so many great things in life due to my personality. To hear Akeila speak about turning things you/people would see as a weakness into superpowers, was a real eye opener🤩 ☑️ Seeing non-black students truly be interested in finding out more about black history, black owned business or top business that really want to support and empower students from diverse backgrounds really put a smile on my face😄 ☑️ I didn’t realise how impactful societies were until the day. When I was a student at BCU, I joined the Afro-Caribbean society as I wanted to learn more about my culture & of course meet people like me. However, I thought that I didn’t fit in due to my upbringing in a white area as people might perceive me in a different way by the way I speak or pronounce certain words. So, it was great to have conversations with students and really encourage them that a society will be a great insight in career paths but also for personal development!✨ A huge thanks for Nicole Riley & Sharon Davidson for being behind the insightful event. Truly standing up for opportunities, connections and black success for students and entrepreneurs👏🏾 Here is the video I captured of the event. It helps shape the story of what students had in store for them at BCU😎 #blackhistorymonth #bcu #contentcreator #blackownedbusinesses #blackbusinessmarket #careerfair
