For me, this is one of the greatest existential (and use that word advisedly) threats to western liberal democracy. Both disinformation and misinformation (and there is a distinction between the two) are now all pervasive and are having a polarising effect on society. Getting to the 'truth' is becoming ever more difficult. Grey zone warfare is both real and active and manipulating how we see and respond to world events. We will be revisiting this issue again shortly, from the perspective of 'so what' for the intelligence analyst.
Misinformation and disinformation are important considerations for open-source intelligence. In this podcast, Harry Kemsley OBE and Sean Corbett CB MBE are joined by Amil Khan, the founder and CEO of Valent Projects, to explore the difference between misinformation and disinformation and how analysts can overcome the challenges posed by both to support the delivery of open-source intelligence. Janes community of analysts act with impartiality, and review every source for reliability, bias, objectivity, and level of certainty to deliver assured intelligence data, using tradecraft methods consistent with your own.
