What was wrong with me? It was the golden years of GE. I was about to be promoted. And I was desperate to get off the bus. Everyone thought I was mad. My father told me to stay. “You’ve got so much to learn from a company like that,” he said. And he wasn’t wrong—GE was the ultimate masterclass in structure, discipline, and process. But I didn’t want structure. I didn’t want a predictable route. I wanted to feel the wind of business in my hair. I wanted the thrill of a motorcycle—the sharp turns, the open road, the freedom to explore without a map. So, I ignored the advice, got off the bus, and hit the throttle. That was 16 years ago, and the ride at Rullion has been everything I craved: fast, challenging, and wildly unpredictable. Ice on the road? Plenty. Zero visibility? Absolutely. Moments I thought I might fall off? More than I can count. But here’s the thing about a ride like this—it’s not just about the destination. It’s about the people riding alongside you. At Rullion, it’s the camaraderie, the trust, and the shared determination that keep you moving forward, even when the road gets tough. Sometimes, taking the leap feels reckless. But for me, it was the only way to truly feel alive. What’s the boldest decision you’ve made in your career?

Love this James Saoulli. Glad you and Rullion are doing so well. To answer your question…boldest decision was giving up well paid corporate roles to set up MuddyWellies. Challenging, unpredictable but with equal measures of brilliance for the team and our clients 🤩

16 years ago, in 2008, GE was on the verge of collapse as the financial crisis hit and decimated GE Capital, almost bringing down the whole company. That's my recollection.

Having been at GE (Capital) myself, I can see what you mean in relation to the dilemma of making a decision that runs counter to “expectations” but for me, I’m so damn curious about what could be that I just have to do it. I feel your energy James. Forwards, zero regrets.

Great post James Saoulli My boldest career move was leaving the UK (and the Rullion family) to embark on a new opportunity and life in the USA 🇺🇸
