The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has just released their **Dirty Dozen** list for 2024, highlighting fruits and vegetables with the highest levels of pesticide residues. As we continue to prioritize our health and well-being, it's crucial to stay informed about the quality of the food we consume. The Dirty Dozen is a list compiled by EWG that ranks produce items based on their pesticide levels. These are the fruits and vegetables that, when conventionally grown, tend to have higher concentrations of pesticide residues. Consuming produce with high pesticide residues can have potential health risks. By being aware of this list, you can make more informed choices and consider buying organic options for these items when possible. Dirty Dozen List: 1. Strawberries 🍓 2. Spinach 🥬 3. Kale, Collard, and Mustard Greens 🥗 4. Peaches 🍑 5. Pears 🍐 6. Nectarines 🍑 7. Apples 🍏 8. Grapes 🍇 9. Bell Peppers 🌶️ 10. Cherries 🍒 11. Tomatoes 🍅 12. Celery 🌿 Make informed choices and embrace a healthier lifestyle. #EWG #DirtyDozen #HealthyEating #OrganicProduce #FoodSafety #Wellness #SustainableLiving https://lnkd.in/gq9PYT3W

The updated Dirty Dozen list is out! https://lnkd.in/gMWkmRpH (Strawberries, spinach, kale/collard/mustard greens, grapes, peaches, pears, nectarines, apples, bell & hot peppers, cherries, blueberries, green beans) This is the annual list of fruits and veggies with the most pesticide residues. Lots of literature is suggesting these are horrible for our health and should be avoided (the pesticides, not the produce!) Whenever it's possible, shoot for organic. The EWG (Environmental Working Group also gives the intermediate list - not the highest or the lowest- just scroll down on the page with the Dirty Dozen. Conversely, here's the Clean 15, with the lowest residue, where conventionally grown is probably OK: https://lnkd.in/gV2hj9AW (avocados, sweet corn, pineapple, onions, papaya, sweet peas, asparagus, honeydew, kiwi, cabbage, watermelon, mushrooms, mangoes, sweet potatoes, carrots) Here is one article which supports eating organic from not only pesticide residue standpoint, but also a nutritional one: https://lnkd.in/gyZ9ekva Sarah Ballantyne, Ph.D., argues against nutritionally superior qualities in organic produce: https://lnkd.in/gsGYZH44 She does, however, express some concerns about pesticides: https://lnkd.in/g5nxdttH As with most issues related to health, you can probably find as many opinions as you look for! This is what health coaches do - help you sort through the data, decide what's best for you, and implement. That implementation often takes time and experimentation, and here is where working with a coach can be invaluable. Curious? 2024’s “Dirty Dozen” has been announced! How much pesticide would you like with your fruits and veggies? Every year the Environmental Working Group, EWG, compiles a list of the top 12 fruits and vegetables that contain the most pesticides. By diving deep into the information provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), EWG concluded that of the sampled, conventionally grown, fresh vegetables and fruits, 75 percent contained pesticides that might be harmful. Of those that made the Dirty Dozen list, 95 percent contained pesticides that might be harmful. Buying organic produce would eliminate the need to worry about pesticides. If that is not an option, try the following steps to clean your fruits and vegetables. After washing your hands and making sure all utensils are clean, it is recommended to simply [1] hold the item in the sink that is slightly filled with cold water, [2] gently remove all dirt with a clean paper towel, and [3] using a second clean paper towel, dry the produce. And the winners are! 1. Strawberries 2. Spinach 3. Kale, collard and mustard greens 4. Grapes 5. Peaches 6. Pears 7. Nectarines 8. Apples 9. Bell and hot peppers 10. Cherries 11. Blueberries 12. Green bean Here's to the Life of Your Health.

In an non organic nutshell - from the post "Organic foods are not pesticide free. They’re also not healthier, more nutritious, or better for the environment. EVERYTHING can be toxic or non-toxic at a certain dose. Natural isn’t “better” & the word “toxic” without context means nothing. In reality, the foods you get at the store don’t have clinically meaningful levels of ANY pesticide, whether it is organic or conventional. If you want to spend extra money on organic foods, that’s your choice. But don’t do so based on false information." #saveyourmoney #besmart #agriculture #pesticides

DID you know that organic food is also grown with pesticides? Yup, it’s one of the biggest misconceptions, thanks to activist groups like the EWG. Agriculture uses pesticides: herbicides, fungicides, insecticides to prevent crops from being destroyed by things that would impact food yields. When growing food for billions of people, that’s the reality. Many organic pesticides are less effective and need to be used at higher levels than their conventional counterparts. In addition, many have worse ecological impact: they can target non-selectively, killing predators of pests we don’t want to kill, or bioaccumulating and impacting other species in the ecosystem. Is organic produce worth the cost? The answer is sometimes... Some crops require more pesticides than others, and knowing which ones do and don't can help you choose where to spend your organic food dollars. To prioritize your spending, the Environmental Working Group publishes a list of the "Dirty Dozen" and the "Clean Fifteen" fresh fruits and vegetables tested for pesticide contamination every year. The Dirty Dozen foods contain the highest level of pesticides, so it's worth spending extra to buy them organic. On the other hand, the Clean Fifteen show very low levels of pesticides, so organic isn't a must for us. To make it easier, you can download the Dirty Dozen list from https://lnkd.in/dnNHb4iB. I print it out and take it with me when I shop until I get the list memorized. Make informed choices for your health and wallet by using this list to guide your organic produce purchases. PSA for today… if you only eat conventional fruits & vegetables, you can be just as healthy as someone choosing organic. Don’t feel bad that it not affordable in your budget. Just eat more fruits and vegetables—all kinds, colors, forms (frozen, canned, dried count too). A single focus on achieving 5+ cups per day is completely do-able yet only 10% ACTUALLY consume this amount. Plan ahead.. think about it —how can YOU do it? -Add avocado or berries at breakfast -Load up those bowls or sandwiches with veggies at lunch -Sliced apples and nut butter as a snack -Salad with dinner and guac on handheld foods -Melon for dessert Easy peas 🫛

To buy organic or to not buy organic? 🤔 I remember trying to decide on my answer to this question when I was in my 20s, raising my first baby. At that point in my life I was big into coupons and my grocery list often revolved around what I could get for cheap. Anyone else a crazy couponer? However, it was getting harder and harder to ignore the information about pesticides and insecticides and their effects on health. It’s no secret that non-organic produce is sprayed with pesticides and insecticides, but what I didn’t realize is that those pesticides are linked to a number of short and long-term health issues, including an increased risk for cancer and a potential disruption to our metabolic health as well as the reproductive, immune, endocrine and nervous systems. I decided to take it slow and started with the milk I was buying my toddler. Then I moved onto the Dirty 12 and the Clean 15 from the Environmental Working Group (EWG). Every year they make a new guide to help shoppers know which fruits and veggies are sprayed the most heavily (the dirty 12) and which are sprayed the least (the clean 15). I found this list really helpful as a newbie to buying organic who was also mindful about what she was spending. I hope it helps you as well. *A helpful tip for the budget conscious….save money by buying produce that is in season and buying organic fruits and veggies from the freezer section. https://lnkd.in/ebNU574V
